Art Terminologies

Giclée - A computerized reproduction technique in which the image and topography are generated from a digital file and printed by a special ink jet printer, using ink, acrylic or oil paints. Giclée printing offers one of the highest degree of accuracy and richness of color available in any reproduction techniques

Lithography - Printing technique using a planographic process in which prints are pulled on a special press from a flat stone or metal surface that has been chemically sensitized so that ink sticks only to the design areas and is repelled by the non-image areas. Lithography was invented in 1798 in Germany by Alois Senefelder.

Serigraphy (Silk-screen) - A printing technique that makes use of a squeegee to force ink directly onto a piece of paper or canvas through a stencil creating an image on a screen of silk or other fine fabric with an impermeable substance. Serigraphy differs from most other printing in that its color areas are paint films rather than printing ink stains.

Remarque – Additional enhancements by the artist on some or all of the final prints within an edition

Artist's Proof (AP) - Print intended for the artist's personal use. It is common practice to reserve approximately ten percent of an edition as artist's proofs, although this figure can be higher. The artist's proof is sometimes referred to by its French épreuve d'artist (abbreviation E.A.). Artist's proofs can be distinguished by the abbreviation AP or E.A., commonly on the lower left of the work.

“Gallery wrapped” is a way of finishing a canvas artwork so it’s ready to hang without needing an additional frame. The canvas is stretched tightly over thick wooden stretcher bars, and the edges of the canvas are wrapped around the sides and stapled on the back.

Stretched - When a canvas is described as stretched, it means the artwork has been pulled tightly over a wooden frame (called stretcher bars) and secured on the back. This process keeps the canvas flat and smooth, ready to hang on the wall or to be placed inside an outer frame.

Hand Embellished - When an artwork is hand embellished, the artist (or a skilled studio artisan) personally adds paint, texture, or other details by hand on top of the printed or finished piece. This gives each artwork unique highlights and depth, making no two pieces exactly alike — even within the same edition.

A Sure Foundation — Giclee On Canvas - HVSUREF30 NOTES: A Sure Foundation — Giclee On Canvas. In addition to collecting shells, I have always gathered everything else i found beautiful. My aesthetic could best be described as “natural history museum”. In fourth grade, my friend Jodi and her family took me with them to Slide Rock, AZ and shook their heads as I insisted on bringing home a rock about the size of a phone book because it was the EXACT same color as my skin. Exact! I have fossils, arrowheads, feathers and petrified wood. As i looked over my collection, I knew a portrait of Jesus Christ has to be done out of rocks. He is the Rock of our Salvation, after all. Rocks are constant, strong and reliable. Climb atop a boulder and you get a longer view and a better perspective. In the parable of the wise man, he built his house upon a rock and was therefore able to withstand the storms. During the storms of my life, it felt as if there was a hand reaching down to pull me up on that Rock. When I lost my dad at 17, and my sisters-in-law since then, my vantage from the Rock showed me that my family is eternal and that I would get to be with them again. At 30 when I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, I found the peace i needed to process that and also the knowledge that my life was in God’s hands so whatever the outcome, all would be well. I knew Jesus Christ had felt everything I would be called on to endure and like a rock, He wasn’t going anywhere. He would be with me through it all. The times in my life where I have felt despair have always been when I have climbed down off that rock to sit in the soggy sand of worldly pursuits. From there, I only see what is right in front of me. It is lonely and shifty. I’m so grateful that once I realize what I am doing, I can repent and get back on that sure foundation where there is always peace and an eternal view. Shelby "A Sure Foundation" by Shelby Stroud is a remarkable portrait of Jesus created from a collage of stones, wood, and other earth elements, symbolizing strength and steadfastness. This unique artwork by Shelby Stroud is perfect for Christian homes and spaces, offering a powerful visual representation of faith and resilience.. Shelby Stroud bio

orty-three years ago, my parents named me Shel having no idea what obsession was in my future. I grew up loving all things ocean and married another thalassophile shortly after he returned from his mission in French Polynesia. We have five children - three daughters and two sons. I was an art major at Southern Utah University and used that knowledge to become a graphic designer to support my husband as he finished at BYU and went on to medical school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and further training in Saint Louis, Missouri where we decided to stay. I have dabbled in all forms of art all my life from collage to sculpture to painting but only recently found my niche when I used my collection of seashells to create a portrait of one of my daughters in the fall of 2020. Since then, I have gone on three more shelling expeditions in Florida and Alabama to collect more supplies with which to work and have used those and more sent to me by friends, family and even strangers to create two more pieces. I’ve never been so passionate about anything before. Every part of the process makes me so happy. Finding the shells, sorting, cleaning and finally creating with them - I could do any part indefinitely and be thrilled with the opportunity. I have found my identity and the way I want to express myself, and I am grateful to be a Shel.
