The Gallery's Perspective
A soft, celebratory hush settles over this sun-warmed harbor — you can almost feel the last light gilding roofs and water. Hallam uses a saturated, sunset palette of pinks, lavenders and coral to turn ordinary coastal details into a kind of evening music: terracotta pots brimming with red and magenta blooms in the foreground, a neat row of moored sailboats, and a hillside town rendered in warm highlights. The painting balances intimacy and vista — the carved stone balustrade and flowering terrace make the view a private pause, while the distant mountains and palazzo-like cluster of buildings suggest the wider Riviera beyond. Energetic, confident brushwork gives foliage and stone a tactile presence without losing the scene’s calm. "Portofino Evening" is an enhanced serigraph on canvas created by Kerry Hallam in 2000. From the deluxe edition of 150 on canvas, the edition also included 350 on white paper for a total edition size of 500. The artwork is signed 'Kerry Hallam' lower left and annotated lower right. The artwork is framed in a classic gold-tone frame and has a framed size of 36.5 x 45.5". The artwork ships framed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. "Portofino Evening" captures the timeless beauty of land meeting sea along the twilit coast of the Italian Riviera. The Mediterranean at sunset offers up a dazzling array of pinks, lavenders and magentas as boats are moored for the day, and the sun retreats behind distant mountains. With his bold palette, Hallam brings to life the picturesque mountainside of the Italian Riviera with its traditional, white-stucco buildings and inviting waters now bathed in sunset’s palette. More commonly known as "twilight," "Portofino Evening" captures the beginning of those nocturnal hours, when we pause for a moment of reflection upon our day's activities, and ponder the excitement of the nighttime ahead. We have been to this place, shared this magical time of day, perhaps sipping an aperitif at this outdoor cafe - the smell of oregano wafting through the air. Kerry Hallam is as refreshing and spirited as his paintings. He creates enticing images through bold palettes and captivating compositions. Born in Northern England, Hallam showed early artistic talent when he won a six-year scholarship to London University's Central College of Art. After a formal art education under British master painters Leslie Cole, Patrick Heron and Hans Tisdale, he completed his military service in the prestigious Gurkha brigade in Hong Kong and Malaya. Hallam's talent was further acknowledged when he was selected for inclusion in Britain's Royal Society of Artists in Watercolour.
Through innumerable one-man shows, Kerry Hallam has been honored by galleries around the world having shown at exhibitions in Paris, London, Tokyo, New York, Beverly Hills, Hong Kong, San Francisco and many other cities. His work has been featured in countless newspaper and magazine articles as well as in PBS television specials.
