The Gallery's Perspective
Sunlight and the scent of flowers feel almost present in Kerry Hallam’s Paris Sunrise. The composition places you on a small balcony set for morning—white tablecloth, a single red chair, and breakfast dishes arranged as if someone has just stepped away—while a wash of pale sky and a softened Eiffel Tower sit in the distance. Hallam’s lively brushwork and saturated color make the greenery and blooms feel exuberant: scarlet, magenta, and emerald strokes tumble over the railing and climb the wall, their energy balanced by the calm, cool plane of the sky. The deep red awning tilts into the picture like a protective gesture, giving the scene a private, intimate quality. "Paris Sunrise" is an enhanced serigraph on canvas created by Kerry Hallam in 2002. From the edition of 281, the artwork is signed 'Kerry Hallam' lower right and annotated lower left. The artwork is framed in a classic gold-tone frame and has a framed size of 36 x 32". The artwork ships framed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. To Kerry Hallam, painting was about expression, exuberance, and excitement. The wonderous qualities of Impressionism – the splashes of color, the rush of emotion, the emphasis on feeling over meticulous precision – are what captured the soul of a place. To Hallam, it was more important that the flowers were there, vivid in every way and spilling over the balcony railing. The senses would detect their silky feel, vivid color, and intoxicating scent – all heightened in that dazzling morning light. Paris is the perfect subject matter for an impressionist piece. After all, the most memorable thing you can take away from a place is not the souvenirs or photos, but the feeling that the place inspired in you. When you remember a special place, how does it make you feel? What thoughts, what emotions, what memories would you have of a day that Hallam portrays? A day that would begin, as in "Paris Sunrise," with the bright light of a summer morning, as you enjoy your café and croissants on the balcony of your hotel room, looking over the Eiffel Tower. What places would you visit today, what would you experience, what would you see in that beautiful place? They haven’t yet made a souvenir that can capture the feeling of a day like that – except, perhaps, a painting. Kerry Hallam is as refreshing and spirited as his paintings. He creates enticing images through bold palettes and captivating compositions. Born in Northern England, Hallam showed early artistic talent when he won a six-year scholarship to London University's Central College of Art. After a formal art education under British master painters Leslie Cole, Patrick Heron and Hans Tisdale, he completed his military service in the prestigious Gurkha brigade in Hong Kong and Malaya. Hallam's talent was further acknowledged when he was selected for inclusion in Britain's Royal Society of Artists in Watercolour.
Through innumerable one-man shows, Kerry Hallam has been honored by galleries around the world having shown at exhibitions in Paris, London, Tokyo, New York, Beverly Hills, Hong Kong, San Francisco and many other cities. His work has been featured in countless newspaper and magazine articles as well as in PBS television specials.
