Villa di Mare, 2001

You can almost feel the salt air and warmth in Kerry Hallam’s Monte Carlo. From a lush, elevated vantage the serigraph pours color across a busy harbor — turquoise sea, a scatter of white masts, and the pale, sunlit blocks of a Mediterranean skyline pushing into distant bluish hills. The foreground’s vigorous brushlike marks of palms, flowering shrubs and terracotta roofs give the scene immediate warmth and a sense of close-up life, while the looser, lighter treatment of the city and mountains suggests heat and shimmering distance. Hallam balances energetic, saturated greens and magentas against the calmer, cool blues of sea and sky so the picture feels both lively and relaxed. It’s the kind of view that keeps offering small discoveries — a cluster of boats, a terrace tucked into the hillside — and holds the easy optimism of a bright coastal afternoon.
