Tremor, 1992

A quiet little surprise lives in this compact composition — a softly shaded ball of string sits on a ledge while, behind it, a simple sketch of scissors is tacked to a pale wall. The scale is intimate; the image’s small size makes the ordinary objects feel like stage props in a private moment. Brennan’s delicate pencil work renders the twist of fibers and the shadow beneath the ball with affectionate attention, while the dotted line between string and scissors gives the scene a playful, almost conspiratorial suggestion of movement or intent. The limited, warm palette and spare background create a calm, slightly whimsical stillness that balances curiosity with restraint. It’s the kind of small, memorable picture that rewards a pause — a gentle reminder of how familiar things can become quietly mysterious when framed just so.
The Artwork
"String and Scissors" is a lithograph created by Fanny Brennan in 1996. From the edition of 300, the artwork is initialed 'FMB' lower right and annotated lower left. The image size is 2.5 x 2.25" and the artwork is framed in a contemporary silver and dark gray frame. The artwork ships framed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Each of Brennan's prints is a compact world of real and imaginary elements, playful and ambiguous, though completely enjoyable. "My intention is to depart entirely from the the customary view of miniature painting," notes the artist. "I do not paint mementos. Rather, by placing familiar objects in unfamiliar settings, I try to produce an image that will be remembered for its own sake." This work is published by Chalk & Vermilion Fine Arts, an affiliate of Martin Lawrence Galleries, no prior ownership.
