11. Ernie Barnes Sugar Shack   $550.00 Barnes created the painting The Sugar Shack in the early 1970s. It gained international exposure when it was used on the Good Times television series and on the 1976 Marvin Gaye album I Want You. According to Barnes, he created the original version of The Sugar Shack after reflecting upon his childhood, during which he was not "able to go to a dance."In a 2008 interview, Barnes said, "The Sugar Shack is a recall of a childhood experience. It was the first time my innocence met with the sins of dance. The painting transmits rhythm so the experience is re-created in the person viewing it. To show that African-Americans utilize rhythm as a way of resolving physical tension." The Sugar Shack has been known to art critics for embodying the style of art composition known as "Black Romantic," which, according to Natalie Hopkinson of The Washington Post, is the "visual-art equivalent of the Chitlin' circuit." When Barnes first created The Sugar Shack, he included his hometown radio station WSRC on a banner. (He incorrectly listed the frequency as 620, though it was actually 1410. Barnes confused what he used to hear WSRC's on-air personality Norfley Whitted saying "620 on your dial" when Whitted was at his former station WDNC in the early 1950s.) After Marvin Gaye asked him for permission to use the painting as an album cover, Barnes then augmented the painting by adding references that allude to Gaye's album, including banners hanging from the ceiling to promote the album's singles. During the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever anniversary television special on March 25, 1983, tribute was paid to The Sugar Shack with a dance interpretation of the painting. It was also during this telecast that Michael Jackson introduced his famous "moonwalk" dance. The original piece is currently owned by Jim and Jeannine Epstein, and is on display at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh.

32. Ernie Barnes From Pads To Palette   $325.00 Former NFL player Ernie Barnes lends insight and understanding into preconceived notions about aggression and issues of sensitivity. In his first published account, Barnes chronicles his childhood in segregated Durham, North Carolina, through his successful pro football career, to his debut solo exhibition at a prestigious gallery in Manhattan, New York. Paul Tagliabue, NFL Commissioner: "Ernie Barnes is an excellent example to our current players that there is life after football. We in the NFL family are pleased that Ernie is recognized as one of the leading artists of our day."

33. Ernie Barnes The Pulling Guard   $1995.00 FROM THE ARTIST: Here is a drawing which really needs no explanation. It is a drawing portraying the moods and excitement in the game of football a game which does strange things to men makes them lose their heads makes them hate. It is primeval combat elbows and shoulder pads muscle and helmets. It is a George Plimpton discovered, no place for Walter Mitty. I have tried, in my art to re-embody all of the elements of the game in order to portray my subject as fact deliberately distorting the body in order to inject the strength and the spirit of the men who play the game. It is almost impossible to introduce the athlete in the art of satisfying his thirst for competitiveness in athletics unless the mood and guts of the game are dramatically expressed. Even before my pencil touches the paper, I mentally strip my idea of its concrete accompaniments in order to inject my composition with actual reality and spirit.

If football is to be the subject then football should be felt when the drawing is complete.

My experiences in the game where guts, desire and a total disregard for personal safety are prime prerequisites provided the nucleus around which this drawing is formed. One of the luckiest brakes I had as an athlete came in 1960 when I was signed to an American Football League contract with the San Diego Chargers. Here I played in the arena with men who felt that this opportunity to play professional football was the greatest gift since their first bicycle. We suffered ridicule and prejudice from people who said that our league wouldn't last. Sometimes the only audience seemed to be the concession workers and the custodians.

But we continued to play and dedicate our strength and energies to the game we loved and enjoyed.

Now, with five years of professional football behind me, I am proud of having played in a league where dedication, pride and confidence formed the roots of its success. Thanks to the American Football League, my art talent developed with purity as a result of my opportunity to play. Now this drawing which is a view from the arena floor, has been capsuled for you to enjoy. ERNIE BARNES.

45. Ernie Barnes Ninety Nine, A Hundred   $450.00 This print is one of twelve from the Beauty of The Ghetto Collection.

To the rhythm of the rope, girls chanted: "Green, Green, eat ice cream, stick your nose in kerosene. Yellow, Yellow, kiss a fellow, till his lips are big and mellow. Blue, Blue, howdy do, tell your sweetheart I love you. White, White, you can't fight, I will jump this rope all night. One, Two..." There is no time to think about being poor when you're having fun.

Her share of the world's work may be limited but the fact that it's work makes it precious.

56. Ernie Barnes Street Song   $895.00 This print is one of twelve from the Beauty of The Ghetto Collection.

In backyards of dirt, long underwear drips from wire clothes lines. Grass grows through cement cracks. The streets boast oil stains and Cadillacs. There is the smell of fried chicken, hot links, and fish. Fashions are knotted stockings, head rags and stringy-brimmed hats. Kids write their names in freshly poured cement and street corner toughs smell of Old Spice and play the dozens. And together on a street corner, teenagers sing the songs of their favorites.

57. Ernie Barnes The Runner   $895.00 This print is one of twelve from the Beauty of The Ghetto Collection.

I have always had a great emotion towards the open country and its melancholy. It presented the almost religious aura of nature still being the teacher of man. Here, this young man - full of grace, force and fascination for the surrounding countryside, is having a love affair with life. Breathing out the poisons of tension, and breathing in the power of God. The rural ghetto has always provided a serenity to man's spirit and God steps into his life and comforts his soul.

58. Ernie Barnes High Aspirations   $895.00 This print is one of twelve from the Beauty of The Ghetto Collection.

In the rear of an old weather-scarred house, where the nails have been picked up and the ground has hardened after frequent rains, a young man is alone and shooting a tattered ball through a peach basket goal. He dreams of better things, intelligence, refinement, grace and beauty but only as assets which will allow him to master a jump shot or a hook shot, not as ideal conditions of life.

59. Ernie Barnes The Graduate   $899.00 This print is one of twelve from the Beauty of The Ghetto Collection.

He walks with pride in heritage and a consciousness of race. He is rich with the attitude that he is going somewhere, to do something and to be somebody. He is a high soul who looked at his conditions as being just temporary. Making things better required an attitude dedicated to working at just that.
