Giclée - A computerized reproduction technique in which the image and topography are generated from a digital file and printed by a special ink jet printer, using ink, acrylic or oil paints. Giclée printing offers one of the highest degree of accuracy and richness of color available in any reproduction techniques

Lithography - Printing technique using a planographic process in which prints are pulled on a special press from a flat stone or metal surface that has been chemically sensitized so that ink sticks only to the design areas and is repelled by the non-image areas. Lithography was invented in 1798 in Germany by Alois Senefelder.

Serigraphy (Silk-screen) - A printing technique that makes use of a squeegee to force ink directly onto a piece of paper or canvas through a stencil creating an image on a screen of silk or other fine fabric with an impermeable substance. Serigraphy differs from most other printing in that its color areas are paint films rather than printing ink stains.

Artist's Proof (AP) - Print intended for the artist's personal use. It is common practice to reserve approximately ten percent of an edition as artist's proofs, although this figure can be higher. The artist's proof is sometimes referred to by its French épreuve d'artist (abbreviation E.A.). Artist's proofs can be distinguished by the abbreviation AP or E.A., commonly on the lower left of the work.

“Gallery wrapped” is a way of finishing a canvas artwork so it’s ready to hang without needing an additional frame. The canvas is stretched tightly over thick wooden stretcher bars, and the edges of the canvas are wrapped around the sides and stapled on the back.

Stretched - When a canvas is described as stretched, it means the artwork has been pulled tightly over a wooden frame (called stretcher bars) and secured on the back. This process keeps the canvas flat and smooth, ready to hang on the wall or to be placed inside an outer frame.

Hand Embellished - When an artwork is hand embellished, the artist (or a skilled studio artisan) personally adds paint, texture, or other details by hand on top of the printed or finished piece. Streaming through scenic Glacier National Park in northwest Montana, this locomotive boldly crosses a narrow trestle high above historic Two Medicine River. This is how the Great Northern would have looked on a fine summer day in the late 1930s, the white-capped Rocky Mountains keeping their snow all year.

Nicknamed the â€œEmpire Builderâ€ after its founder James Hill, the Great Northern dominated the Northwest from the 30s through the 40s. Hill built the railroad without any government funds, supporting the endeavor by helping to develop Glacier National Park, which in turn promoted travel on the train. The Great Northern was eventually sold and incorporated into other lines to form Burlington Northern. Says Smith, â€œMy grandfather was a conductor on the Great Northern and he quit driving the family car when he was in his fifties, he just figured the railroad could take him every place he wanted to go.â€

Tucker Smith bio

Tucker Smith, b. 1940, St. Paul, Minnesota, (United States) Tucker Smith spent his early years outside of St. Paul, Minnesota. When he was 12 years old his family relocated to Pinedale, Wyoming at the foot of the Wind River Range. As a child, his artistic skill was already evident, although his family viewed art simply as an avocation. After graduation from college Tucker Smith spent the following eight years as a computer programmer and systems analyst for the State of Montana, painting on a part time basis. He eventually realized that art was his true passion in life and he became a full time professional artist at the age of 31. Today, Tucker Smith is nationally renowned for his balanced, subtle paintings inspired by the wildlife and mountain atmosphere that has been such an integral part of his life. His home and studio on the Hoback Rim in Western Wyoming offer direct access to his favorite subjects; vast landscapes, sprawling cattle ranches, and the back country with its abundant wildlife and natural, unspoiled beauty. Tucker notes, â€œI just recently returned with some friends from a week long horse pack trip into the Wind River Mountains where we painted, photographed and explored. I believe it is necessary to experience nature first hand in order to be able to convey it to someone else through a paintingâ€. He adds, â€œWhen doing an animal painting, my first consideration is the setting. It is the particular environment that made the animal. The relationship between the two is of great interest to meâ€.
