Giclée - A computerized reproduction technique in which the image and topography are generated from a digital file and printed by a special ink jet printer, using ink, acrylic or oil paints. Giclée printing offers one of the highest degree of accuracy and richness of color available in any reproduction techniques

Lithography - Printing technique using a planographic process in which prints are pulled on a special press from a flat stone or metal surface that has been chemically sensitized so that ink sticks only to the design areas and is repelled by the non-image areas. Lithography was invented in 1798 in Germany by Alois Senefelder.

Serigraphy (Silk-screen) - A printing technique that makes use of a squeegee to force ink directly onto a piece of paper or canvas through a stencil creating an image on a screen of silk or other fine fabric with an impermeable substance. Serigraphy differs from most other printing in that its color areas are paint films rather than printing ink stains.

Artist's Proof (AP) - Print intended for the artist's personal use. It is common practice to reserve approximately ten percent of an edition as artist's proofs, although this figure can be higher. The artist's proof is sometimes referred to by its French épreuve d'artist (abbreviation E.A.). Artist's proofs can be distinguished by the abbreviation AP or E.A., commonly on the lower left of the work.

“Gallery wrapped” is a way of finishing a canvas artwork so it’s ready to hang without needing an additional frame. The canvas is stretched tightly over thick wooden stretcher bars, and the edges of the canvas are wrapped around the sides and stapled on the back.

Stretched - When a canvas is described as stretched, it means the artwork has been pulled tightly over a wooden frame (called stretcher bars) and secured on the back. This process keeps the canvas flat and smooth, ready to hang on the wall or to be placed inside an outer frame.

Hand Embellished - When an artwork is hand embellished, the artist (or a skilled studio artisan) personally adds paint, texture, or other details by hand on top of the printed or finished piece. NOTES: Who could this person be? He is alone and has stopped on his water route long enough to build a fire, have a bit to eat and drink, maybe even to dry items that have gotten wet along the way.

This is the 18th centuryùsomewhere. Is he Englishà or their enemy, the French? We cannot see enough of his flintlock to tell if it is of French or English design. He appears to be a trader, but doesn’t have much with him. The cloth near his leg reveals his goods: silver trade items. His pistol is fully cocked; is he fearful? He has no furs and his Algonquin canoe isn’t large enough for many anyway. His mismatched paddles might have come from two different Indian tribes.

Could this man be the English trader, John Frasier, as he escaped downriver from the French soldiers at Venangoùhis trading post on the Allegheny Riverùin 1752? The French had come down from what is now Canada into the Ohio Valley, along the Allegheny River, to rid the region of English influence. They confiscated Frasier’s trading post and a blacksmith shop. Fraser lost all his trade goods but escaped capture..

"John Buxton was born in the small southern town of Oxford, North Carolina. He excelled at art from childhood. After two years of general college in his home state, he earned his art degree from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, California. He was a successful illustrator for 31 years, working in Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. During this time, he illustrated two books for the National Geographic Society and developed a fascination with documentation and truth in art. In 1994 he left illustration and began painting subjects more personal to his interests. Buxton soon began exhibiting his painting, placing two works in the Birds in Art show at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. Northlight Books later reproduced these two paintings in The Best of Wildlife Art 2 by Rachel Rubin World. He entered, and placed in the Top 100 in the Arts For The Parks competition. The Society of Animal Artists elected him to membership and invited him to show in their national exhibitions. He exhibited with the American Academy of Equine Artists before settling into his true niche: Historical Art. Buxton s historical images of the 18th century often depict scenes from the birth of our nation, allowing the viewer to witness momentous events or experiences from everyday life of the frontier. Many historical sites display Buxton s extensively researched works and several documentary films have been aired that featured his paintings. Buxton s paintings are available as a CD Teaching Aid for educators wishing to give students a more intimate view of America s historical heritage, effectively making history come alive. His original paintings and commissioned works are in great demand. Buxton exhibits his original art at Settlers West Galleries in Arizona, Gallery One of Ohio and Lord Nelson s Gallery in Gettysburg. Buxton has shown his artwork at the Gilcrease Museum and his largest painting; a life-size standing portrait of Abraham Lincoln hangs in a place of honor at the National Civil War Museum.
