Giclée - A computerized reproduction technique in which the image and topography are generated from a digital file and printed by a special ink jet printer, using ink, acrylic or oil paints. Giclée printing offers one of the highest degree of accuracy and richness of color available in any reproduction techniques

Lithography - Printing technique using a planographic process in which prints are pulled on a special press from a flat stone or metal surface that has been chemically sensitized so that ink sticks only to the design areas and is repelled by the non-image areas. Lithography was invented in 1798 in Germany by Alois Senefelder.

Serigraphy (Silk-screen) - A printing technique that makes use of a squeegee to force ink directly onto a piece of paper or canvas through a stencil creating an image on a screen of silk or other fine fabric with an impermeable substance. Serigraphy differs from most other printing in that its color areas are paint films rather than printing ink stains.

“Gallery wrapped” is a way of finishing a canvas artwork so it’s ready to hang without needing an additional frame. The canvas is stretched tightly over thick wooden stretcher bars, and the edges of the canvas are wrapped around the sides and stapled on the back.

Stretched - When a canvas is described as stretched, it means the artwork has been pulled tightly over a wooden frame (called stretcher bars) and secured on the back. This process keeps the canvas flat and smooth, ready to hang on the wall or to be placed inside an outer frame.

Hand Embellished - When an artwork is hand embellished, the artist (or a skilled studio artisan) personally adds paint, texture, or other details by hand on top of the printed or finished piece. This gives each artwork unique highlights and depth, making no two pieces exactly alike — even within the same edition.

NOTES: Other Side of the Tracks -From the roar of enormous ocean waves to the din of a restaurant kitchen, from the wind through grass to the waves lapping against a shoreline, artist Ken Auster has taken viewers around a world of experiences with his paintings. Auster's release from The Greenwich Workshop is another of his favorite subjects: the sunny hills of San Francisco. Ken Auster's painting style combines the masterful use of color with an economy of brushwork. With this new work, he takes his expressive painting style one step further and painted with his fingers. "Sometimes the brush comes between me and the painting," says Ken. "So I eliminated the brush.".

Remembering Ken Auster It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our artist, Ken Auster. In his formative years in Long Beach, California, Ken grew up with his feet deeply planted in surf and sand. Caught up in the ground swell of the 1960s surfing culture, Ken plunged into both the sport and the art and graphics that came out of the new surfing craze. In the 1990s, Ken Auster moved into plein air painting, capturing immediate scenes in a painterly realist manner, but maintaining a strong graphic sensibility from his previous experience. The result was a painterly evocation of cityscapes, landscapes, interiors and, of course, beach scenes that have an uncommon graphic and geometric strength. In his own words, Ken described his art: Ã¢â‚¬Å“IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢m really drawn to the irony of what I do. I love that juxtaposition of paintings you recognize from art history with everyday experiences. What I like to do is paint things a little more common, more everyday. They say if you are able to take something ugly and paint it beautifully, then youÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ll have a beautiful painting and something a little beyond the obvious or whatÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s expected.Ã¢â‚¬Â We will miss working with Ken, and cherish his work that we published.
