You Played that Card

A rush of motion and heat is the first thing this canvas gives you — you can almost feel dust rising as horse and rider surge into the thick of the herd. Andy Thomas uses a warm, earthy palette and loose, energetic brushwork to make the scene feel immediate: the pale, startled horse and the dark, hulking buffalo become contrasting centers of attention, while softer, shadowed figures recede into the trembling background. The rider’s intent posture and the horse’s flared nostrils suggest urgency without spelling out every detail, leaving the moment vivid and lived-in rather than staged. Overall, the painting balances drama and atmosphere—its color and movement carry you into the plains and the intensity of a hunt, while the broad, painterly handling keeps the image alive and slightly impressionistic in feeling.

Story: There are many written descriptions of buffalo hunts by the plains Indians, and they are all fascinating. The very idea that a man could ride a pony into a raging stampede of wild buffalo and use a small bow and arrow of his own construction to deliver a lethal shot is almost unbelievable. The genesis of many of my paintings starts with real events that are, to a modern man like me, hard to imagine experiencing. The painting is a way for me to be there from a very safe distance.
