Art Terminologies

Giclée - A computerized reproduction technique in which the image and topography are generated from a digital file and printed by a special ink jet printer, using ink, acrylic or oil paints. Giclée printing offers one of the highest degree of accuracy and richness of color available in any reproduction techniques

Lithography - Printing technique using a planographic process in which prints are pulled on a special press from a flat stone or metal surface that has been chemically sensitized so that ink sticks only to the design areas and is repelled by the non-image areas. Lithography was invented in 1798 in Germany by Alois Senefelder.

Serigraphy (Silk-screen) - A printing technique that makes use of a squeegee to force ink directly onto a piece of paper or canvas through a stencil creating an image on a screen of silk or other fine fabric with an impermeable substance. Serigraphy differs from most other printing in that its color areas are paint films rather than printing ink stains.

Remarque – Additional enhancements by the artist on some or all of the final prints within an edition

Artist's Proof (AP) - Print intended for the artist's personal use. It is common practice to reserve approximately ten percent of an edition as artist's proofs, although this figure can be higher. The artist's proof is sometimes referred to by its French épreuve d'artist (abbreviation E.A.). Artist's proofs can be distinguished by the abbreviation AP or E.A., commonly on the lower left of the work.

“Gallery wrapped” is a way of finishing a canvas artwork so it’s ready to hang without needing an additional frame. The canvas is stretched tightly over thick wooden stretcher bars, and the edges of the canvas are wrapped around the sides and stapled on the back.

Stretched - When a canvas is described as stretched, it means the artwork has been pulled tightly over a wooden frame (called stretcher bars) and secured on the back. This process keeps the canvas flat and smooth, ready to hang on the wall or to be placed inside an outer frame.

Hand Embellished - When an artwork is hand embellished, the artist (or a skilled studio artisan) personally adds paint, texture, or other details by hand on top of the printed or finished piece. This gives each artwork unique highlights and depth, making no two pieces exactly alike — even within the same edition.

Certificate of Authenticity Information

Limited Edition Artwork Includes a Certificate of Authenticity

All limited edition artwork purchased from The Collection Shop includes a Certificate of Authenticity issued by the artist, publisher, studio, or authorized publishing house whenever applicable. These certificates help verify authenticity, confirm edition status, and reinforce the collectible nature of the artwork.

Why Open Edition Artwork Typically Does Not Include Certificates

Open edition artwork generally does not include a Certificate of Authenticity because these pieces are produced without predetermined edition sizes or production limits. Unlike limited editions, open editions are intended to remain available over time and are not restricted to a fixed quantity, which is why publishers and artists typically do not issue certificates for these works.

Please note that the absence of a certificate does not indicate an item is not authentic. All artwork offered by The Collection Shop is sourced directly from artists, publishers, authorized distributors, galleries, or approved channels to ensure authenticity and quality.

If a specific piece includes additional documentation or special publisher-issued materials, these details will be listed within the product description.

Alexander Millar bio

I was born in 1960 into the small mining community of Springside a few miles outside the town of Kilmarnock on the west coast of Scotland. Life within the small Scottish village was very traditional and although I grew up in the 60 s era it felt more like the 40 s. My formative years were spent in the company of old men dressed in dark suits smoking woodbines partnered with large missile-shaped women decked out in headscarves and pinnies. My father worked for British Rail and I got great pleasure from simply sitting in the atmospheric steam filled stations which even today I find are the most romantic, nostalgic places to be. Many of my most romantic paintings are set within that very atmosphere – I guess I m just a big old fashioned nostalgic romantic at heart! It therefore comes as no surprise to many that my favourite film is The Quiet Man . I escaped school in 1976 and eventually fled Springside to set myself up in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. This jump from sleepy peacefulness to hustle and bustle was like going from the frying pan straight into the fire. I found Newcastle had, and still has, its fair share of characters locally known as Gadgies which fed me much inspiration later on in life when I finally discovered my destiny as an artist. After a number of different jobs I finally settled down in 1988 to become a professional artist. I am completely self-taught and after many years of developing my own style in art I turned to images remembered from my childhood and used the local Tyneside Gadgies as models in my paintings. The past couple of years have been especially exciting as my work has taken on a life of its own. Sales have gone through the roof and everyone seems to be taking notice of these solitary figures I create. I m continually surprised to see the effects my paintings have on people, on many occasions I ve had women moved to tears absorbed by a painting that evokes memories of their father or grandfather. After a number of sell out exhibitions one of my paintings was entered in the Daily Mail s Not the Turner Prize . Ten thousand works were entered and my painting was chosen as one of the finalists which were exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London.
