The younger man’s closed eyes, slumped shoulders and the hammer in his hand speak plainly of weariness and the burden he carries; behind him, the embracing figure supports him with strong, steady hands that feel protective rather than triumphant. Muted blues and warm flesh tones set a quiet, intimate mood, while the haloed light around the standing figure gives the scene a calm, restorative glow. At their feet, white lilies and a narrow stream of red suggest sacrifice and renewal without spelling out a single doctrine. One of the most popular Christian images of all time, Forgiven captures Christ embracing and forgiving a fallen soul. It symbolizes the everlasting love and forgiveness of our Savior. Tom will tell you that the painting was not his idea alone...For about a month, he says he was looking for inspiration. He prayed and fasted, hoping for an idea to spark.
It happened at a church service.
“While I was singing, God downloaded this image in my mind,†Blackshear said. “I always say that I did not create ‘Forgiven.’ It was given to me.â€
