Woman In Red
$1,500.00
A quiet gravity holds this tableau: a strong, grieving figure wearing the familiar crowned diadem of Liberty cradles an unarmed Black man as if in a modern pietà. The grayscale palette focuses attention on gesture and expression — her steady, intent gaze and the relaxed, vulnerable pose of the man convey both mourning and protection. The draped cloth beneath them and the fallen torch at her foot subtly shift classical iconography into a present-day commentary. Small details — the man's long hair, the visible tattoo, the way light models muscle and fabric — make the scene immediate and human rather than allegorical distance. It’s a work that feels like a call to witness, to hold loss and hope together in the same frame.
The Artwork
As I See It: Liberty. y "Liberty" is a tribute to Michelangelo's "Pieta". This speaks to the loss of our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness in this country. My mother image is a black woman, if you didn't know--the original model for the Statue of Liberty was a black woman carrying a lantern and broken chains. She was a gift from French abolitionists. The black man represents all black men and women who have been denied freedoms. On his arm is a Black Lives Matter tattoo.
