There’s an immediate hush in this sun-baked town square — the moment just after a pistol fires and before the crowd’s reaction fills the air. The central figure, shown in shirtsleeves and a wide-brimmed hat, stands steady with arm extended toward an opponent beyond the wagons; his posture and the small puff of smoke at the gun tell you exactly where the tension sits. Andy Thomas builds the scene with warm, dusty tones and late-afternoon light: the ochres of the dirt, the soft shadows beneath wheel spokes, and the pale blue of the distant sky all reinforce a heavy, heat-thinned quiet. The surrounding details — the toyshop facade, stacked hay, and horses hitched to carts — anchor the drama in a believable, everyday setting, which makes the interruption of violence feel all the more sudden. It’s a cinematic slice of frontier life that feels both observed and remembered, a tableau that holds the stillness of that one decisive second.

Since the fight took place at about 6 pm on a hot July day, Hickok was probably dressed as shown- in shirtsleeves. He carries his Colt Navy pistols worn butts forward in the manner of time, which allowed him to use the reverse plains draw, or a cross draw. One can almost hear the creak of wagons iron rims, muffled hoof beats and the muted sound of people going about their business before the thunder of pistols halted all sound and movement for one brief moment before a crowd gathered.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e

Andy Thomas is not only an immensely talented painter, but also a storyteller with the images he creates. Thomas s medium is primarily oil, but he also works in watercolor, pen and ink, charcoal, pencil, and ink wash. He is also a very accomplished sculptor.
