You can almost hear the crack of pistols and the thud of hooves in this tense street scene. The composition is crowded with quick gestures: men leaning from doorways, a rider rearing, and figures advancing or faltering beneath a cloud of smoke. Warm earth tones—ocher dust underfoot, dusky browns in coats and buildings—are cut by flashes of pale muzzle fire and the cool gray of a horse, which together heighten the drama. Andy Thomas keeps the handling loose and energetic; short, textured strokes give movement to dust and fabric so the moment feels immediate rather than staged. Andy Thomas is not only an immensely talented painter, but also a storyteller with the images he creates. His subject matter consists of a variety of images from historical events to intimate moments of everyday life. The artist s desire to create is funneled into the area of painting realism that ranges from very loose to very tight. Thomas s medium is primarily oil, but he also works in watercolor, pen and ink, charcoal, pencil, and ink wash. He is also a very accomplished sculptor.
