The Gallery's Perspective

The scene reads as a long, weary procession—covered wagons, horses, and bundled figures stretching back along a muddy road—yet the faces and upright postures suggest resilience rather than defeat. Andy Thomas uses a muted, autumnal palette and soft, overcast light to create an atmosphere of cold resolve; the bare trees and smoke-streaked sky deepen the sense of travel in difficult weather. Small domestic details—a log cabin with people at the door, stacked wood, a cornfield edge—remind us these are lives passing through familiar countryside, not an anonymous crowd. Andy Thomas is not only an immensely talented painter, but also a storyteller with the images he creates. The artist s desire to create is funneled into the area of painting realism that ranges from very loose to very tight. Thomas s medium is primarily oil, but he also works in watercolor, pen and ink, charcoal, pencil, and ink wash. He is also a very accomplished sculptor.
