You Played that Card

There’s a quiet tension in this wide vista where early oil derricks punctuate a soft prairie sky. You first notice the tall wooden rigs—some close, some receding into the distance—giving the scene a rhythm that feels both industrious and strangely pastoral. A narrow creek in the foreground reflects the pale sky and threads toward the middle ground, where simple wooden buildings and a horse-drawn wagon suggest a frontier community emerging around industry. Thomas balances cool blues and lavender clouds with the warm earth tones of the soil and rig timbers, creating a late-afternoon hush that feels reflective rather than harsh. Small touches of greenery and wildflowers at the edge of the water soften the mechanical presence, so the painting reads as a story of change—nature and work side by side—rather than a shout of progress. It’s the kind of view that quietly honors a moment of transition on the open land.

In those days, trust was very important as most business was conducted on a handshake, and a man's word was only as good as his reputation. Oil Dikes ran while towns built up around them. Oil Patch, Black Gold and Boomtown are great scenes of the dikes and oil towns.
