A sudden, dangerous instant holds the whole canvas—two horses rearing and slipping on a rocky slope while a bear lunges from the right, mouth open and fierce. You feel the rush of motion: tossed man and flailing tack, the bronzes and chestnuts of the horses streaked with energetic brushwork, and the bear’s shaggy silhouette carved against a cooler, misty forest. The painting’s warm earth tones—burnt sienna, umber and ochre—make the animals’ panic immediate, while the subdued blue-grays of the background push the pines and distant light back, giving the scene depth and urgency. Small, confident strokes build texture in fur and foliage so that the landscape reads as both threatening and alive. There’s an almost cinematic tension here—raw, physical, and unromanticized—that pulls you close to the moment and leaves you with the lingering thrill of a narrow escape.

Thomas s medium is primarily oil, but he also works in watercolor, pen and ink, charcoal, pencil, and ink wash. He is also a very accomplished sculptor.
