You can almost hear the low murmur and the clink of glasses: the old trapper in the center studies his cards with steady, weathered hands while the man in the dark suit to his right smiles with the sly confidence of someone who thinks he's won. Around them, a variety of characters — a wary cowboy, a thoughtful youth, a debonair spectator and a woman leaning in with amused interest — give the scene its human texture. Andy Thomas layers loose, painterly brushwork and a muted, earthy palette to suggest the smoky saloon air and the late-evening glow. The composition feels intimate and theatrical at once; facial expressions and posture tell a small drama without any need for words. He had, it was clear to see now, underestimated the old trapper. When he had raised the pot for the big strike, the trapper had pulled yet another gold piece from his beaded pouch and called his bluff. Those soft gray eyes peered out from under the aged lids and missed nothing, and that put the pinch on the Welshman’s game. When the cowboys joined the table, he was sure the situation would improve since their reckless play always fattened his pocket. Alas, the trapper seemed to inspire them to play their cards close, and now the Welshman was feeling the pressure. The cowboy called Breaker, a fair card player on most nights was showing some real skill tonight even with the animated Pearl perched on him.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eNow, with the biggest pot of the evening at stake, he was holding what should be the winning hand. Andy Thomas is not only an immensely talented painter, but also a storyteller with the images he creates. His subject matter consists of a variety of images from historical events to intimate moments of everyday life. The artist s desire to create is funneled into the area of painting realism that ranges from very loose to very tight. Thomas s medium is primarily oil, but he also works in watercolor, pen and ink, charcoal, pencil, and ink wash. He is also a very accomplished sculptor.
