You Played that Card

You can almost hear the murmur of the saloon in this warm, story-rich scene: men crowded along a bar lean forward to see a painting being revealed, while a single woman in a bright blue dress stands at the center of attention. The composition feels theatrical — the artist arranges figures so their poses and turned heads create a shared moment of curiosity and friendly critique. Earthy browns and ochres give the room a late-afternoon glow, but that blue dress and the pale canvas act like small spotlights, drawing your eye toward the painting-within-the-painting and the social exchange around it. Brushwork is soft and tactile enough to suggest worn fabric, wood grain, and the dust of frontier life without losing the tenderness of the human interactions. There’s humor here, too: the gathering feels like an improvised jury of neighbors, equal parts admiration and teasing commentary. As a scene about community and the pleasure of showing work, it carries warmth and gentle affection toward both the artist and his audience.

I suppose that turned the drinking crowd of the town into art critics of a sort. So, that’s what I’m showing here as Charlie unveils his latest work. The characters, of course, are taken from Russell’s own paintings.

This active art market dried up when Russell married his wife Nancy who actively and successfully managed his career.
