The Gallery's Perspective
You can almost feel the bustle underfoot in this sun-washed scene — the town alive with motion and purpose. Broad, earthy brushstrokes give the street a tactile, well-traveled surface, while ragged clouds and a warm late-afternoon light soften the buildings' edges. Oil derricks puncture the skyline like a promise of work, their pale frames repeated down the street to create a sense of depth and progress. Figures, horses, early automobiles and storefronts are rendered with loose, attentive strokes that suggest movement and everyday rumble rather than exact detail; that looseness helps the painting feel lived-in and immediate. The red-brick block on the left and the blue-green awnings offer a pleasing color contrast that keeps the composition grounded and approachable. There’s a hopeful energy here — a snapshot of a town in transition where industry, community, and ordinary rhythms meet.

The derricks are both a backdrop and an integral part of the town. Overnight, literally hundreds of men seek on the oil rigs would invade a town. Often, with the shortage of beds, they would erect tent cities on the outskirts of a town. During the day, horses, wagons and cars would share the streets and at night, theaters and saloons would offer the needed relaxation to the men who had come for work and adventure.\u003c/p\u003e

Andy Thomas is not only an immensely talented painter, but also a storyteller with the images he creates. His subject matter consists of a variety of images from historical events to intimate moments of everyday life. The artist s desire to create is funneled into the area of painting realism that ranges from very loose to very tight. Thomas s medium is primarily oil, but he also works in watercolor, pen and ink, charcoal, pencil, and ink wash. He is also a very accomplished sculptor.
