The Gallery's Perspective
You can almost hear the crash of chairs and the clatter of cards in this boisterous saloon scene. Andy Thomas stages a moment of comic chaos: a flying poker table in the foreground, toppled chips and scattered cards, and a line of startled figures caught mid-reaction. The painterly brushwork and warm, earthy palette—rich browns, sunlit ochres and flashes of blue—give the scene energy and a sense of heat, as if the room is charged with movement. Notice the contrast between the stunned couple by the bar and the quick-drawing cowboy whose pistol flash breaks the composition’s horizontal sweep; small gestures—a lifted hand, a tipped hat, a spilled beer—make the narrative lively and immediate. The work feels like a snapshot from a rollicking story, equal parts humor and danger, that livens any wall with a spirited, cinematic presence.

Andy Thomas is not only an immensely talented painter, but also a storyteller with the images he creates. His subject matter consists of a variety of images from historical events to intimate moments of everyday life. The artist s desire to create is funneled into the area of painting realism that ranges from very loose to very tight. Thomas s medium is primarily oil, but he also works in watercolor, pen and ink, charcoal, pencil, and ink wash. He is also a very accomplished sculptor.
