The Gallery's Perspective
There’s an immediate, disarming tenderness in this little elephant — the raised trunk, upturned face and open mouth read as pure, playful joy. The figure’s rounded belly, softly folded ears and squat, steady feet give it a warm, childlike presence that feels affectionate rather than grand. Subtle surface modeling and a muted, natural palette of grays and soft terracotta on the soles and trunk edge keep the expression gentle and believable, while the small base quietly anchors the pose without drawing attention away from the character itself. Because this maquette was created from an archival model, it carries the intimacy of an animator’s working study: a charming, three-dimensional snapshot of a moment in movement. About Fantasia Elephant Maquette
This skillfully crafted, hand-painted sculpture originates from an animation maquette in The Walt Disney Archives; the production molds for this piece are made from a digital three-dimensional scan. The Fantasia elephant maquette reproduced for this edition was on display at the end of 1966 on the north windowsill of Walt Disney's formal office on the Burbank Studios lot. Numbered Limited Edition 1,940.
These pieces (made of Resin) are the same material the original maquette's were made of. Because some of the original molds no longer exist these are made from a digital three-dimensional scan. They did these figurines off the movie so it is the first "mold" of the sculpture
