The Gallery's Perspective
You can almost hear the clearing of a throat — and then the orator begins. Scott Gustafson’s scene brims with theatrical humor: a stately great horned owl in a crimson robe raises a feathered baton while a closely packed audience of owls reacts with every degree of attention from rapt to sleep‑prone. The rich, autumnal palette of browns, golds and warm creams gives the group a cozy, bookish quality, while the pops of yellow in many wide eyes add an alert, slightly mischievous energy. Textured brushwork suggests soft, layered plumage and the velvet folds of ceremonial robes without calling attention to technique; it simply feels tactile and pleasing. Small details — the tiny black bows at collars, the comically drooping eyelids in the front row, the orator’s half‑open beak — make the moment both witty and oddly affectionate. Artist Scott Gustafson has of late been inspired by aphorisms and the turn of a phrase including most recently the Fine Art Limited Editions Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil and Birds of a Feather Flock Together. Birds have the type of unique collective nouns that send Gustafson into inspired flights of fancy. A peep of chickens, a band of jays, a conspiracy of ravens, a murder of crows and yes, a parliament of owls! This Great Horned orator speaks with commanding authority and while the front row struggles to stay awake, most of the others are rapt listeners.

"Storytelling through pictures has always held a certain fascination for Scott
Gustafson; be they the moving images in animated cartoons, or the epic
illustrations of N. C. Wyeth. Upon entering the Chicago Academy of Fine Art,
Scott was 99% sure that he wanted to become an animator, but it was that 1%
that ultimately drew him more and more into the world of stretched canvas and
oil paint. ""As an animator, ""Gustafson says, ""your contribution to a given
film is, by necessity, limited to whatever character you've been assigned. But
as an illustrator, you're responsible for locations, sets, costumes, props,
lighting and character designs, not to mention the overall mood and emotion of
a given painting. It's about the best job there is.""
Over the nearly twenty-five years that span his career, he has had the
opportunity to fulfill commissions for a number of varied clients and
publishers such as Celestial Seasonings, Playboy magazine, Saturday Evening
Post, The Bradford Exchange, DreamWorks and The Greenwich Workshop. His
illustrated books include The Night Before Christmas, Peter Pan, Nutcracker,
as well as two original titles, Animal Orchestra and Alphabet Soup. His newest
release, Classic Fairy Tales, was recently awarded a Chesley award for best
interior book illustrations from the Association of Science Fiction and
Fantasy Artists and is currently in its third printing.
