The Gallery's Perspective
There is a quiet, watchful patience to this scene that feels almost like a held breath. The hunter, clad in a wolf pelt with eagle feathers and traditional fringed clothing, kneels low at the river’s edge, bow in hand and eyes fixed beyond the tall grasses. Liang’s warm, earthy palette — soft ochres, olive greens and muted umbers — gives the moment a dusty, late-afternoon hush, while the painterly handling of grass and clothing suggests wind and the small movements of nature rather than sharp detail. The figure’s posture and the angled bow create a taut sense of readiness: he is part of the landscape, steady and attentive, not separate from it. Small details — the feathered headdress, braided hair, and the quiver at his side — add personality without distracting from the overall mood of focused calm. As a composition, it feels intimate and respectful, a glimpse of an ancient practice lived with dignity and quiet skill.

Hunting the River Bank<br> LIMITED EDITION CANVAS
“A Southern Peigan hunter is patiently waiting for a small group of buffalo coming to the river bank for water,” says artist Z.S. Liang. “He is wearing a wolf pelt with golden eagle tail feathers for his hunting medicine. Since the wolf and the eagle are great hunters, the Indian believes this medicine will bring him success.”
Similar to Liang’s Masterwork® Canvas, Solitary Hunter, (Sold Out at Publisher) and Woodland Warrior (limited availability), this is a portrait of a man at one with his world, part of the cycle of hunting, eating and utilizing every part of the animal for clothing, shelter, decoration and display of honor and bravery. This ability to survive in a wild environment is part of what has intrigued Z.S. Liang for decades. His rural Chinese upbringing was centered on ancient and traditional lifestyles that made it easy for him to relate to the Native American. No resources were wasted in his childhood home, either.
Liang is a regular participant in the Masters of the American West Exhibition and Sale at the Autry National Center. He set a new auction record at the 2009 Coeur d’Alene Art Auction for The Painted Robe, another fine art edition available from The Greenwich Workshop, Inc. in giclée canvas as both a MuseumEdition® Canvas and Masterwork® Canvas.

Z.S. Liang, born in China in 1953 and raised in a family of artists, published his first painting at age 6 in a children's magazine. His art education spanned two continents, beginning at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing and continuing to the Massachusetts College of Art and Boston University. His award-winning paintings hang in both corporate and private collections around the world and several of his murals are permanently on display in New York City. His works are in corporate and private collections throughout the United States and many other countries, including Sheraton Corporation, Marriott Corporation, Weseda University Tokyo and the West Point Museum. Among the many awards Liang has received are the Best of Show and People's Choice at the American Society of Portrait Artists, the Arthur Ross Award for Painting at the Classical America New York, and the Lila Acheson Wallace Award for Painting at the Society of American Illustrators. Liang's paintings have been featured in the Artist's Magazine and the International Artists.
