The Gallery's Perspective
A single rearing horse and its rider dominate the foreground with a fierce, immediate presence — you feel the surge of motion before anything else. The warrior’s feathered headdress, uplifted spear, and round shield are rendered with careful attention, and the animal’s tense muscles and flared nostrils give the moment a raw, dramatic urgency. Behind them, low buildings burn, the orange glow and drifting smoke suggesting both loss and a decisive turning point. The muted sky and the dust of the plain keep the palette grounded so the flames and the bright plume of feathers read as focal notes: energy against restraint. Small groups of riders in the middle distance help place this as a collective action rather than a solitary display, while the scale of the horse and rider in front creates a heroic, almost emblematic figure. The result feels like storytelling through posture and light — a snapshot of conflict that is as much about courage and reclamation as it is about the physical tumult of the scene.

About Cheyenne Burning of Fort Phil Kearney, 1868
Red Cloud, Chief of the Oglala Lakota Sioux, masterminded the most successful war against the United States fought by an Indian nation. A series of forts established along the Bozeman trail became the focus of Red Cloud"s attacks. Fort Phil Kearny suffered the brunt of these assaults.
The U.S. Army did not have the resources to protect both the first Transcontinental Railroad and the Bozeman Trail. The railway took priority and peace through negotiation was sought with Red Cloud. However, the Oglala chief would not attend any treaty talks until the Army withdrew its forces from the contested Powder River Country in Northeastern Wyoming and Southern Montana.
After the army abandoned their posts, Red Cloud"s warriors destroyed the established forts and out-buildings to reclaim and restore their land as it was before the incursion of the white man. Red Cloud gave the honor of destroying Fort Kearny to Little Wolf, Chief of the Cheyenne, shortly after the army"s departure. The smoke from the fires could be seen by the retreating U.S. Army personnel as they fled the area.

Z.S. Liang, born in China in 1953 and raised in a family of artists, published his first painting at age 6 in a children's magazine. His art education spanned two continents, beginning at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing and continuing to the Massachusetts College of Art and Boston University. His award-winning paintings hang in both corporate and private collections around the world and several of his murals are permanently on display in New York City. His works are in corporate and private collections throughout the United States and many other countries, including Sheraton Corporation, Marriott Corporation, Weseda University Tokyo and the West Point Museum. Among the many awards Liang has received are the Best of Show and People's Choice at the American Society of Portrait Artists, the Arthur Ross Award for Painting at the Classical America New York, and the Lila Acheson Wallace Award for Painting at the Society of American Illustrators. Liang's paintings have been featured in the Artist's Magazine and the International Artists.
