Art Terminologies

Giclée - A computerized reproduction technique in which the image and topography are generated from a digital file and printed by a special ink jet printer, using ink, acrylic or oil paints. Giclée printing offers one of the highest degree of accuracy and richness of color available in any reproduction techniques

Lithography - Printing technique using a planographic process in which prints are pulled on a special press from a flat stone or metal surface that has been chemically sensitized so that ink sticks only to the design areas and is repelled by the non-image areas. Lithography was invented in 1798 in Germany by Alois Senefelder.

Serigraphy (Silk-screen) - A printing technique that makes use of a squeegee to force ink directly onto a piece of paper or canvas through a stencil creating an image on a screen of silk or other fine fabric with an impermeable substance. Serigraphy differs from most other printing in that its color areas are paint films rather than printing ink stains.

Remarque – Additional enhancements by the artist on some or all of the final prints within an edition

Artist's Proof (AP) - Print intended for the artist's personal use. It is common practice to reserve approximately ten percent of an edition as artist's proofs, although this figure can be higher. The artist's proof is sometimes referred to by its French épreuve d'artist (abbreviation E.A.). Artist's proofs can be distinguished by the abbreviation AP or E.A., commonly on the lower left of the work.

“Gallery wrapped” is a way of finishing a canvas artwork so it’s ready to hang without needing an additional frame. The canvas is stretched tightly over thick wooden stretcher bars, and the edges of the canvas are wrapped around the sides and stapled on the back.

Stretched - When a canvas is described as stretched, it means the artwork has been pulled tightly over a wooden frame (called stretcher bars) and secured on the back. This process keeps the canvas flat and smooth, ready to hang on the wall or to be placed inside an outer frame.

Hand Embellished - When an artwork is hand embellished, the artist (or a skilled studio artisan) personally adds paint, texture, or other details by hand on top of the printed or finished piece. This gives each artwork unique highlights and depth, making no two pieces exactly alike — even within the same edition.

Aviation art meets nostalgic American landscapes in finely detailed compositions that capture the beauty of flight and historical moments. With a focus on military aviation fine art and vintage aircraft scenes, each painting showcases the precision and drama of flight through masterful realism. From WWII aircraft artwork to classic flight illustrations, these works bring aviation history to life with dynamic sky compositions and rich, atmospheric detail. Patriotic landscape art blends aviation heritage with timeless settings, preserving the legacy of historic air combat and peaceful moments in aviation history. Whether depicting soaring aircraft or flight-inspired landscapes, these paintings combine technical accuracy with artistic emotion, creating a compelling tribute to the golden age of aviation.

The Beginning of the End - GWBEGEND

NOTES: The Beginning of the End. "The flight of the 'Enola Gay' and the capture of the island of Iwo Jima were two of the most significant events of World War II. I wanted, in some small way, to pay tribute to those who captured that island fortress even as I paid homage to the United States Army Air Forces and the crew of the 'Enola Gay' for the mission. Both events hastened the end of the war and made the invasion of the Japanese homeland unnecessary." Crewmembers with Colonel Paul Tibbets completed several missions against Nazis in Germany before participating in the invasion of North Africa. A third, dramatic change occurred when Tibbets was named leader of the 509th Composite Group. He and an elite crew transitioned from the B-17 Flying Fortress to the largest aircraft flown during World War II, the B-29 Superfortress. The transition was cloaked in secrecy. The aircraft itself was designed to specifications calling for a bomber capable of flying 5,000 miles, at 400 mph and carrying 20,000 pounds in bombs. The requirements were extraordinary in the late 1930s. In 1934, Boeing engineers designed the Model 299 that became the XB-15 and the B-17. By 1936, Boeing engineers worked on an updated XB-15, Models 330 through 334A. It wasnt until 1939 that Model 341 came along with an improved wing..

William Phillips bio

"Phillips grew up loving art but never thought he could make it his livelihood. At college he majored in criminology and had been accepted into law school when four of his paintings were sold at an airport restaurant. That was all the incentive he needed to begin his work as a fine art painter. Bill Phillips is now a renowned aviation artist and the landscape artist of choice for many collectors. Bill's strengths as a landscape painter, a respect and reverence for a time and place, help him when painting aviation as well as classic landscapes. Phillips often spends days observing landscape subjects. Finding companionship with the land, he is able to convey the boundlessness of nature on the painted canvas inspiring a reverence for the natural landscape in its beholders. After one of his paintings was presented to King Hussein of Jordan, Phillips was commissioned by the Royal Jordanian Air Force. He developed sixteen major paintings, many of which now hang in the Royal Jordanian Air Force Museum in Amman. The Smithsonian Institution s National Air and Space Museum presented a one-man show of Phillips work in 1986. He is one of only a few artists to have been so honored. In 1988, Phillips was chosen to be a U.S. Navy combat artist. For his outstanding work, the artist was awarded the Navy s Meritorious Public Service Award and the Air Force Sergeants Association s Americanism Medal. At the prestigious annual fund raiser for the National Park Service, Bill s work has been included in the Top 100 each year he has entered the competition and his work has won the Art History Award twice. Phillips was selected as the Fall 2004 Artist in Residence at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and tapped by the U.S. Postal Service to paint the stamp illustrations and header design for a pane of twenty stamps in 1997 entitled Classic American Aircraft. He was chosen again in 2005 for a pane of twenty stamps (ten designs) entitled American Advances in Aviation."
