There is an intimate, almost conspiratorial moment here: a woman holds a pale mask aside just enough to reveal one guarded eye and the warm glow at her chest. That light—painted as a radiating burst—becomes the heart of the image, suggesting something private, true, and luminous that she both protects and offers. Around her, patterned garments and a garden of small blossoms create a rich, decorative backdrop; the strong reds, golds, and jewel tones make the uncovered skin and the mask’s pallor read as two very different faces the figure presents to the world. Blackshear balances symbolism and portraiture with tenderness. The mask’s smooth neutrality contrasts with the woman’s expressive eye and subtle smile, while the ribboned earring and geometric motifs add a ceremonial, almost theatrical sense. The result feels both personal and composed—an image about self-revelation and the quiet courage it takes to show one’s inner light. It’s the kind of picture that brings warmth and thoughtfulness into a room, quietly reminding the viewer of the dignity behind a revealed truth.

About Intimacy (serigraph) Original Release
"The Intimacy painting has two sides to it," Thomas explains. "On one side, the woman held several masks near her face symbols of the bland or false masks that people wear when they go into the world to socialize or do business." The right side of the woman's face revealed her beautiful glaze, a beam of light radiating from her body, and a beautiful flower garden representing what Thomas calls, "the true color of her real self."
Intimacy by Thomas Blackshear II was produced through the exacting serigraph process, using more than 120 hand-applied colors. Also commonly known as silk-screening, serigraphy is a time-honored technique, based on stenciling, for creating prints by hand. Ink or paint is carefully brushed through a fine fabric screen, portions of which have been masked for impermeability. For each color, a different portion of the screen must be masked, and each color must be allowed to dry before the next is applied. Our fine art serigraphs are created from an original painting, and the artist can see and adjust the evolution of the colors through many proofing stages. The depth of color in the resulting fine art serigraph is almost luminous.

THOMAS BLACKSHEAR II, the son of an Air Force captain, was born in Waco, Texas, and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. "Drawing was all I ever liked to do," he says. "While all the other guys were playing baseball or basketball, I was in my house, drawing." He pursued an interest in art throughout high school, securing a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago. After a year there, he transferred to the nearby Academy of Art. While finishing his college education, he was recruited by Hallmark Cards and later became the apprentice of illustrator Mark English.
Blackshear settled in Kansas City, where he became head illustrator at the prestigious Godbold/Richter Studio. A year later, he began a prosperous freelance career, illustrating many advertisements, several U.S. Postal Service stamp collections - one called "Black Heritage," another on classic movies, and a third on jazz musicians - and several series of Hamilton Group collector s plates featuring scenes from Star Wars, Star Trek, and The Wizard of Oz. Although he was successful, he was dissatisfied and decided to pursue a career in fine art.
Blackshear has received many awards for his artwork, including the Society of Illustrators coveted Gold Medal. He was profiled on The Living Canvas, an art magazine of the airwaves that was shown on public television, and he has been featured on the Ebony/Jet Showcase and The 700 Club, and in The Saturday Evening Post. An exhibit of his original works for the Black Heritage stamp series premiered in 1992 at the Smithsonian s National Museum of American History and subsequently toured the United States.
