There’s an exuberant, slightly mischievous energy the moment you meet this scene — a costumed figure perches proudly atop a green streetcar marked “504,” proclaiming “Zulu” in bold letters. The figure’s feathered headdress, grass skirt and beaded torso read as celebratory pageantry; the painted mask and skull-topped staff introduce a playful, ritual edge that keeps the image just on the uncanny side of festivity. Warm golds and oranges glow behind a shadowed tree, while cooler greens and smoky lavenders ground the car and foreground, creating a lively push–pull of heat and haze. Small details — the “Z 2019” medallion on the belly, scattered skulls near the tracks, and the car’s worn paint — give the work personality and a sense of story without spelling everything out.
