There’s an intimate tenderness in the way a hand reaches across this image — a small, deliberate gesture that becomes the heart of the scene. The portrait is composed from a mosaic of tiny objects and stones that come together to form skin tones, shadowed planes and the glint of an eye; up close you notice pebbles, shells and beads, while from a step back those fragments resolve into a young figure and the white-swathed hand she holds. That contrast between detailed material and unified image gives the work a quietly miraculous quality: texture and humble found-objects suggest history and careful care, while the larger likeness reads as an act of compassion and witness. The muted earth tones and soft highlights create a calm, reverent atmosphere rather than drama, so the piece feels less about spectacle and more about a private, sustaining moment of service. It’s a work that rewards both close inspection of its craft and simple attention to the human warmth at its center.
The Artwork
The queen of the Lamanites is overcome by the Spirit and falls to the ground. Abish, a Book of Mormon character who nurtured a secret faith, sees an opportunity to lift the queen and to testify to the many around her. After gathering a crowd of neighbors, Abish reached out to the queen, lifting her to consciousness and witnessing a higher way to the gathered crowd. The viewer becomes the queen, newly awakened to Abish as she reaches out to lift. “Our Father has a vision for each of us individually, and if we are faithful and all of our little choices for good add up, there will be a day where we can be who we need to be to help raise the people around us.” —Shelby Stroud.
