The Gallery's Perspective
There’s an immediacy in the way these two figures hold one another — a private, protective moment set against a wide, luminous city at night. The man’s arms wrap with tense strength while the woman’s hand cradles his head, gestures that read as equal parts solace and reliance. Their turned faces keep the exchange intimate; we see posture and touch rather than clear expressions, which lets the embrace itself carry the feeling. A cool, violet night sky and a glowing moon frame the pair, the city lights below rendered in shimmering, warm dabs that contrast with the deeper blues and purples of the surrounding space. The elongated proportions—particularly evident in the woman’s braided hair and the sweep of her back—lend the scene a gently stylized grace, suggesting endurance and affection rather than literal realism. Overall the painting feels like a quiet vow: two people steadied by one another while looking outward toward an uncertain but hopeful horizon.

About The Black Bone
The Black Bone is a painting of a couple overlooking the city skyline. This painting shows a black man clinging to his queen for dear life or, as he does life. In the style of Ernie Barnes, the elongated figures give the impression of him embracing her as his world, his black bone, and who has historically been the backbone of every struggle of her people. She is gently holding his head while looking to their future which, at first glance may be their immediate surroundings, until the moon reveals the world with a silhouette of Africa. Their fixation on what is ahead, unknown but all the while possible is intentionally turn away from the observation of us as observers for two possible reasons. We are not their focus and we are left to speculate if their facial features suggest uncertainty or faith.

Robert Jackson is a Minnesota native who enjoys creating art that reflect his passion for family, culture, music, and his spiritual upbringing. Robert graduated from Perpich Center for Arts Education (formerly The Minnesota Center for Arts Education High School) in Golden Valley, MN, where his exposure to artwork from various cultures allowed him to enhance his knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts. PCAE also provided a gateway for exhibition of some of Robert's early artwork, such as The Unknown Talent and A Month Isn’t Enough. Robert was blessed to collaborate with several of his mentors during his art journey, including projects with Dr. John Biggers, lecturing on art with Gordan Parks at the Minnesota Historical Museum, and Jacob Lawrence, to name a few.
Robert attended the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota, and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 2005 from Prescott College. Robert continued his growth and success as a freelance artist, as evidenced by his presence in local community galleries and his vast portfolio of commissioned portrait drawings. Robert has proven to be an outspoken representative of authentic black art through his solo and group exhibitions throughout Arizona, including Martin Luther King Celebration, Black Women's Expo, Black Rodeo Expo, Juneteenth Festival, Black Women's Task Force, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Founder’s Day, Omega Rho Zeta Sorority Founder’s Day, Alpha Kappa Alpha Founder’s Day, and at The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
