The Gallery's Perspective
A quiet dignity settles over the figure’s profile—an older soldier standing upright, rifle slung over his shoulder, his white beard catching the light like a crown. The painting centers attention on his posture and face: the turned jaw, the set of his hand on the musket, the folded blanket at his back all suggest steady resolve more than the quickness of youth. Robert Jackson uses a deep, shadowed ground that recedes behind the figure so the warm halo around him reads like a personal victory—he is emerging from darkness into a small, dignified glory. The palette of blues, browns and warm ochres keeps the mood sober yet proud; brushwork around the beard and uniform gives texture and presence without becoming fussy. Small details—the cap’s insignia, the strap across his chest, the weathered skin—make him feel luminous and human rather than heroicized. About Sage of Glory
Sage of Glory portrays the soldier who fights for freedom. He was not too old to labor as a slave nor so too old to fight for his freedom. Although though not as agile as the younger soldiers, he offers something that only comes from a lifetime of suffering and pain. He brings dignity, resilience, pride, honor, and wisdom. The shadowed background places the focus on his posture and is symbolic of the nadir of his past, dark and yet lingering. Nonetheless, he stands in the light, in his glory as a freeman

Robert Jackson is a Minnesota native who enjoys creating art that reflect his passion for family, culture, music, and his spiritual upbringing. Robert graduated from Perpich Center for Arts Education (formerly The Minnesota Center for Arts Education High School) in Golden Valley, MN, where his exposure to artwork from various cultures allowed him to enhance his knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts. PCAE also provided a gateway for exhibition of some of Robert's early artwork, such as The Unknown Talent and A Month Isn’t Enough. Robert was blessed to collaborate with several of his mentors during his art journey, including projects with Dr. John Biggers, lecturing on art with Gordan Parks at the Minnesota Historical Museum, and Jacob Lawrence, to name a few.
Robert attended the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota, and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 2005 from Prescott College. Robert continued his growth and success as a freelance artist, as evidenced by his presence in local community galleries and his vast portfolio of commissioned portrait drawings. Robert has proven to be an outspoken representative of authentic black art through his solo and group exhibitions throughout Arizona, including Martin Luther King Celebration, Black Women's Expo, Black Rodeo Expo, Juneteenth Festival, Black Women's Task Force, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Founder’s Day, Omega Rho Zeta Sorority Founder’s Day, Alpha Kappa Alpha Founder’s Day, and at The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
