You Captured My Heart, 2015
$495.00
There’s a wry, literal humor in this image: a stout black stove burns at the center while neat stacks of books sit around it as if awaiting their fate. The composition feels deliberately theatrical — the stove’s warm orange flame is a small, bright focus against a broad, cool sky that deepens from soft blue to a smoky brown near the top. That contrast between the cozy glow and the steady plume of smoke gives the scene an oddly calm mood rather than panic, as if the books and the burner are engaged in a quiet, conspiratorial exchange. Robert Deyber’s careful rendering keeps forms crisp and simplified — the piles of books read like colorful, geometric blocks that balance the stove’s solid silhouette. The empty, low horizon and generous negative space above heighten the sense of stillness and allow the small tableau to feel both intimate and slightly absurd. It’s the kind of image that smiles at its own metaphor: warmth, consumption, and the playful idea of stories literally fueling warmth and light.
