The Gallery's Perspective
A sudden ripple of panic animates this canyon-side camp — you can almost hear boots slipping on rock and a shouted warning cutting through the afternoon air. The composition centers on a handful of prospectors whose startled, staggered poses tell the story before any detail does: a man recoiling against another, a cook frozen with spoon in hand, and an overturned pan that suggests a meal abandoned mid‑moment. Opposite them, the bear’s bulky silhouette and low, intent posture make it both threat and focal point, its dark form set against sunlit granite so the danger reads instantly. Warm, sun-drenched tones on the men and their camp contrast with cooler, shadowed stone, giving the scene a brisk, cinematic clarity. Small gestures — a hat slipping, a hand reaching for support, the arc of smoke from the fire — heighten the sense of abrupt motion and human vulnerability in the wilderness. There’s a vivid immediacy here: you feel the surprise, the scramble, and an uncertain outcome suspended between a ragged circle of men and an uninvited intruder from the wild.

The California Gold Rush brought fortune seekers from around the world to isolated mining camps around the Sierra Nevadas. Occasionally, the aroma of the next meal would entice some of the local wildlife to visit a forty-niner camp as well. Most would-be miners had never spent an evening in the wilderness before heading to California, so encountering a hungry or angry California Grizzly was a first. The only certainty here is that a tumultuous uproar is about to occur, the outcome of which could fall in anyone’s favor.
This painting is one of three that Situ introduced at the Autry’s 2010 Masters of the American West Show for which he received the Gene Autry Memorial Award. Mian Situ’s epic depictions of California’s “Eastward Expansion” sit side by side with the Westward Expansion works of Moran, Bierstadt and Russell in both their historical importance and artistic greatness.

"Born in Southern China, Mian Situ received his formal art training in his
native homeland of Guangdong, formerly Canton. He graduated with a Bachelor of
Fine Arts from the prestigious Guangzhou Institute of Fine Art. After
instructing for six years, he earned a Masters in Fine Art.
Immigrating to Canada, then later moving to the United States, Mian s
paintings clearly reflect his upbringing in the rural countryside of his
native China. His artistic diversification of subject matter, from the people
of the small villages and farming communities going about their daily lives to
the exquisite portraitures as well as his most recent works inspired by
western historical themes and American landscapes, all reflect the sensitive
dedication of this Master Artist.
Mian has been recognized with many national art awards. During the 2002
Masters of the American West exhibition and sale at the Autry National Center
in Los Angeles California, Mian Situ received the Masters of the American West
Museum Purchase Award, the Thomas Moran Memorial Award for Artistic Merit and
the Patron s Choice Award. In 2003, Mian was honored with the Thomas Moran
Memorial Award, Artist s Choice Award and Patron s Choice Award. Most
recently, in 2005, Mian was presented with the Artist s Choice Award for his
painting, The Word of God. Mian Situ is represented by Trailside Galleries in
Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson, Wyoming. He lives with his wife, Helen and
daughter, Lisa in Southern California.
