The Gallery's Perspective
A hush of gentle motion and protection fills this scene: a luminous angel rises from the water, wings unfurled in a swirl of color, while two children stand above on a fragile wooden bridge. The angel’s upward reach and the soft, radiant dove overhead create a vertical line of care—from the calm pool below, through the guardian figure, and into the glowing light that threads the composition. Kathryn Fincher’s pastel-like handling gives everything a tender, dreamlike softness; the warm golds of the angel’s gown and the cool blues of her wings balance one another, lending both warmth and quiet strength. Notice how the broken bridge and the angel’s extended arm form a protective arc around the children, suggesting movement without alarm. The overall feeling is one of reassurance and watchful presence—a comforting image that reads as both intimate and quietly hopeful.

About Wings of Protection Gallery Wrap
For more than a century, the Guardian Angel, painted by H. Zabateri (c.1918), offered comfort to millions of Christians around the world. The original image was produced as a postcard in color by Lindberg Press. Hundreds of artists throughout the years have created their own versions of the guardian angel, but its story has been silent for decades. It’s too dear to lose, so I decided to paint my own version. The angel, I imagined, would be in motion, actively protecting the children before they are aware they need her. I envisioned placing the angel under the bridge, but what could balance an empty sky? A dove. The Spirit. The glow from the spirit could shine over the entire painting. As I sketched different options, I realized that if I added a fourth element (to the spirit, children, and angel), I could create a circle; a powerful shape that has no end. A rugged cross, shaped from a fence post, was perfect. The angel in my design raises a bouquet of white heather (the flower of protection) to the children. Her other hand directs us to the cross while filling the gap in the bridge. Her wings protect both sides of the bridge and the waters beneath the angel are calm. This was the first painting I completed in my new studio on a mountaintop in the Appalachian Mountains. In researching this original painting from 1918, I was amazed to discover that the rushing waters and forest of the Appalachians was the inspiration for this German painter. Today, more than a century later, the image of the guardian angel demonstrating God’s perfect love and timing, is alive again. Reproduced from the artists original artwork of pastel on paper.

For artist Kathryn Andrews Fincher, painting is not only her profession, but also her passion and portraying children and their fascinating expressions has become her consuming inspiration.
Although a student of art since her teens, Fincher was in her early thirties before painting replaced professional water skiing as her career. (She was once the number-two-ranked trick skier in the nation.) Fincher s mother, a portrait artist, continually encouraged her daughter to paint faces, which seemed to work in contrast to the young painter s desires. Fincher commenced her painting career with a primary focus on wildlife and landscapes; however, after she painted her first child s face in the image titled First Look, the artist had found her niche.
As the artist explains, "Children, with their many discoveries and expressions, and their constant developmental changes in the very early years, are a wealth of visual stories." Fincher adds "I fall in love time after time with the faces of my own children and those of family and friends."
"When I discovered that one little shadow or slight change of the angle in a child s mouth could change an entire expression…I was hooked," says Fincher. "I am not interested in painting unrealistic, perfect children sitting up straight with their knees together, but rather that moment when a child is consumed with studying something or on the brink of a new discovery."
Fincher s goal is to avoid painting the obvious. It is the expressions on children s faces when they are on the brink of experiencing something new that the artist strives to capture. Even the wonderment of viewing life in different forms, such as insects and fish, can be fascinating. "I love to tell stories, and what better avenue than through the face of a child," says the artist.
Upon close observation, you will find inspiration in each of the artist s captivating images. Through Fincher s art, her children will touch you, giving you the opportunity to return to that spirit of youth and innocence each of us so fondly remembers.
