Art Terminologies
Giclée - A computerized reproduction technique in which the image and topography are generated from a digital file and printed by a special ink jet printer, using ink, acrylic or oil paints. Giclée printing offers one of the highest degree of accuracy and richness of color available in any reproduction techniques
Lithography - Printing technique using a planographic process in which prints are pulled on a special press from a flat stone or metal surface that has been chemically sensitized so that ink sticks only to the design areas and is repelled by the non-image areas. Lithography was invented in 1798 in Germany by Alois Senefelder.
Serigraphy (Silk-screen) - A printing technique that makes use of a squeegee to force ink directly onto a piece of paper or canvas through a stencil creating an image on a screen of silk or other fine fabric with an impermeable substance. Serigraphy differs from most other printing in that its color areas are paint films rather than printing ink stains.
Remarque – Additional enhancements by the artist on some or all of the final prints within an edition
Artist's Proof (AP) - Print intended for the artist's personal use. It is common practice to reserve approximately ten percent of an edition as artist's proofs, although this figure can be higher. The artist's proof is sometimes referred to by its French épreuve d'artist (abbreviation E.A.). Artist's proofs can be distinguished by the abbreviation AP or E.A., commonly on the lower left of the work.
“Gallery wrapped” is a way of finishing a canvas artwork so it’s ready to hang without needing an additional frame. The canvas is stretched tightly over thick wooden stretcher bars, and the edges of the canvas are wrapped around the sides and stapled on the back.
Stretched - When a canvas is described as stretched, it means the artwork has been pulled tightly over a wooden frame (called stretcher bars) and secured on the back. This process keeps the canvas flat and smooth, ready to hang on the wall or to be placed inside an outer frame.
Hand Embellished - When an artwork is hand embellished, the artist (or a skilled studio artisan) personally adds paint, texture, or other details by hand on top of the printed or finished piece. This gives each artwork unique highlights and depth, making no two pieces exactly alike — even within the same edition.

Judy Larson's contemporary portraiture blends abstract portrait art with emotional expression, offering a unique approach to figurative abstraction. Her mixed media portraiture captures the essence of the human form through vibrant color, textured paintings, and dynamic compositions. Larson's work delves into the psychological depth of her subjects, creating psychological portraits that speak to the viewer on a personal and emotive level. Through her use of expressive color and innovative techniques, she explores the complexity of human identity and emotion, turning the traditional portrait into a modern, conceptual work of art. Her modern figurative art invites viewers to explore the intersection of color, texture, and form in powerful visual narratives.
The Vanishing - GWVANISH
NOTES: The Vanishing - Today, America"s wild horses exist only at the pleasure of the government and through the dedication of those groups and volunteers who fight diligently for the right of those wild horses to survive. Long gone are the special grasses and plentiful water and endless, open lands that sustained wildlife and wild horses for many centuries. In the last 50 years, wild horses" access to public lands have been cut by 40% due to special interests. Predation, drought, overgrazed lands, drilling, mining, and bait gathers, which separate established bands, mares and their foals, have all contributed to a crisis for healthy wild horse populations. Now, the government is considering culling wild horses for the first time in 50 years, putting the lives of thousands of horses at stake. And, the Bureau of Land Management has asked Congress for permission to kill the 45,000 wild horses relegated to holding pens. While that petition has failed for now, the question of how to control and correctly manage wild horse groups is a perplexing and troubling one. Some advocate for spaying all the wild mares, which would effectively end bloodlines established over hundreds of years, as well as eventually eliminate all wild horse herds. There are those dedicated groups of volunteers who have sought to work with their state and with the BLM in their area to protect their wild horses. Even those protected wild horses experience bait gathers on a regular basis. Without the concerted efforts of the American public, who overwhelmingly support the wild horse cause, our living legends will vanish. Wolves were rescued from the brink of extinction in the 1970s. But in 2011, the government began stripping their protection under the Endangered Species Act and transferring wolf management to the states. One state even reclassified wolves as varmints. By March of 2018, over 5000 wolves had been slaughtered in just seven states. Presently, our government is considering a proposal to strip the now-threatened Endangered Species Act protection from nearly all wolves in the lower 48 states, including for the extremely rare red wolf of North Carolina. Reintroduction of Mexican gray wolves has also faltered because of lukewarm state and uncertain federal government support. Loss of protection will mean that wolves will be vulnerable again to trophy hunting and trapping and mass annihilation. Will they vanish again?.

Judy Larson bio
Judy Larson always knew she was going to be an artist. She was surrounded by them as a child, and was particularly inspired by her father, a professional illustrator. Judy received a Bachelor of Science degree in Commercial Art from Pacific Union College in Northern California, then spent the next 17 years as a commercial artist, illustrator and art director. In 1988, influenced by her love of nature and animals, Judy devoted her time to wildlife art. Her primary focus in each of her paintings is the animal, with the horse as a recurring subject. Her unique approach to her work is through the use of scratch board--a technique that can render magnificent detail but one requiring infinite patience. Scratch board, an old, but little used medium, consists of a smooth, thin surface of hardened China clay applied to a board. The subject is then painted solidly with black India ink to create a silhouette. Now the exacting work begins, engraving the image into the surface of the artwork. While many artists use steel nibs or engraving tools, Judy prefers to work with X-acto blades, changing them ever few minutes to produce as fine a line as possible. Once the subject has been totally scratched, it is a finished black and white illustration, ready for the artist to add color. The methods of adding color are diverse. Judy prefers a combination of airbrush, gouache or acrylics for finishing, with frequent rescratching for detail. Scratch board is a demanding medium, one that Judy has used masterfully in developing her unique approach to wildlife art.
