You first notice the young widow’s face—calm, luminous and quietly steady—set against an ornate, shadowed backdrop. Christensen makes her the visual and moral centre by surrounding her with richly costumed figures who recede into darker tones, so her simple outstretched hand and the two small coins she offers become the painting’s true radiance. The warm golds and deep umbers give the scene a hushed, almost sacred glow; texture in the fabrics and the careful rendering of beards and embroidered robes add a tactile, storyteller’s detail that contrasts with the widow’s plain garments. There is a gentle dignity here: her youth and vulnerability are presented without pity, and the painting suggests a measure of moral strength that outshines wealth and ceremony. It feels intimate and quietly persuasive—a work that lingers because it places compassion and conviction at the center of a busy, ornate world.

About The Widow's Mite Limited Edition Canvas
The parable of the Widow’s Mite is not a story of money, but of piety. "It's about what we are willing to give of ourselves," said artist James Christensen of his best known painting. Christensen’s The Widow’s Mite uses striking light and dark to symbolize spiritual and worldly power. The poor widow, who gave all she had, glows with an inner light. Even her ragged clothing is luminescent. By contrast, the rich men in their expensive robes fade into the shadows behind the radiance of this woman’s gift. An element that made this work so unique was Christensen’s choice to depict the widow as a young woman. It was the custom of the time for a widow to marry one of her husband’s brothers or return to her own family. If neither of these occurred, a woman had few options for supporting herself or her family. If a young woman remained alone, she would most likely be impoverished. Michelangelo also influenced this choice. Upon completion of his work the Pieta, a sculpture of the crucified Jesus laying upon his mother’s lap, Michelangelo was criticized for his depiction of Mary. Though she was Christ’s mother, and therefore older, she appears younger than her son. His response was that virtue and goodness keep one beautiful. Christensen was intrigued by the idea that her righteousness could be revealed by her youth. And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he also saw a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had. Luke 21:1-4 Now, for the first time, The Widow’s Mite is being made available to collectors as a Limited Edition Canvas. It is produced at the same size as the original painting, enabling collectors to enjoy the artwork just as Christensen intended it to be. This offering is time limited, November 1, 2018 through December 31, 2018. At the close of this order window, the edition will be set and no more canvases will be added to the edition.

James Christensen (1942–2017) was a visionary fantasy artist known for his whimsical paintings that blend mythological storytelling with magical realism. Inspired by the world's myths, fables and tales of imagination, James C. Christensen wants his work to add up to more than a beautiful - if sometimes "curious" looking work of art. Having taught art professionally for over 20 years, he likes to think of the world as his classroom. His hope is that through whatever he creates-be it a porcelain, fine art print or book-he can convey a message, inspiration or a simple laugh. He believes that teaching people to use their imagination helps us find solutions to sooth the stresses of everyday life-or get a little lift to help us keep going. In short: all things are possible when you share Christensen's philosophy that "Believing is Seeing." Christensen was born in 1942 and raised in Culver City, California. He studied painting at Brigham Young University and, for a while, the University of California at Los Angeles before finishing his formal education at BYU. Since then, he has had one-man shows in the West and the Northeast and his work is prized in collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. Christensen has also won all the professional art honors the World Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention can bestow, as well as multiple Chesley Awards from the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists. Christensen has been designated as a "Utah Art Treasure," one of Utah s Top 100 Artists by the Springville Museum of Art and received the Governor s Award for Art awarded by the Utah Arts Council recognizing the significance of Christensen s artwork to Utah s cultural communities. He was inducted into the U.S. Art magazine s Hall of Fame and is an Honored Alumnus at Brigham Young University for his contributions to fine art and education. James and his wife Carole, co-chair the Mormon Arts Foundation. He is a frequent guest lecturer at Brigham Young University, and has also given workshops to large companies and organizations on the subject of creative thinking, including the California Art Educator s Association, Hallmark and Intermountain Health Care. In addition to his fine art limited editions on paper and canvas, Christensen s work can be found in five acclaimed books and a series of interactive journals and in three dimensions in porcelain and hand-crafted limited-edition bronze sculptures
