A tender, slightly surreal moment anchors this scene: a burdened, humped figure sits rigidly on a small green plinth while a luminous spirit leans in from above, as if touching the figure’s crown with a quick, bright spark. The checkerboard floor and dark arched recess behind them give the composition a quietly theatrical stage, heightening the sense that this is an intimate encounter played out in shadow and light. Rich, warm browns and golds surround the pair, while the spirit’s soft, ivory garment and the small flashes of jewel-like color on the seated figure create a gentle contrast between heaviness and lightness. You can almost feel the weight the seated figure carries — both physical and symbolic — and the delicate reassurance offered by the hovering presence. It’s an image about endurance and consolation: hardship made visible, and a subtle, almost miraculous tenderness that arrives amid it.
The Artwork
How do you keep your faith in the face of hardship? No one wants to go through trials and ordeals.Yet ffter passing through darkness we often experience a spiritual illumination. What James Christensen is telling in Sometimes the Spirit Touches Us through Our Weaknesses is ADVERSITY HAS ITS PURPOSE. The hunch-backed figure sits on a podium on a checker board floor the checkerboard is the dark and light playing field of life. The hunch is not a deformity but a physical symbol of the burdens all humans bear. In life we experience hardships. The spirit hovers above the hump the electric spark of inspiration flowing from her to him, flowing in through his burdens. The Latin on his green podium reads POST NUBILA PHOEBUS - After Clouds – SUN. Our ordeals are temporary. What is important is that we do the best with what we are given And Remember - Every cloud has a silver lining
