There’s a gentle, almost comic tenderness in the way the small, bowed figure carries both weight and wonder. The hunched man—ornamented in patchwork fabrics, beads and patterned stockings—sits on a green pedestal while a luminous, childlike spirit hovers above, reaching down with a delicate touch. The scene’s warm, burnished browns and the deep tunnel of black behind them make the pale spirit read like a soft flash of hope, while the checkerboard floor grounds their moment in a world of contrasts: light and dark, burden and consolation. Christensen’s details—tiny studs, ruffled sleeves and the man’s thoughtful profile—feel lovingly observed rather than mournful, so the composition reads as reassurance more than reproach. It’s an image about endurance and quiet grace: suffering is visible, but so is a tender spark that transforms it into something unexpectedly luminous.
The Artwork
How do you keep your faith in the face of hardship? No one wants to go through trials and ordeals.Yet ffter passing through darkness we often experience a spiritual illumination. What James Christensen is telling in Sometimes the Spirit Touches Us through Our Weaknesses is ADVERSITY HAS ITS PURPOSE. The hunch-backed figure sits on a podium on a checker board floor the checkerboard is the dark and light playing field of life. The hunch is not a deformity but a physical symbol of the burdens all humans bear. In life we experience hardships. The spirit hovers above the hump the electric spark of inspiration flowing from her to him, flowing in through his burdens. The Latin on his green podium reads POST NUBILA PHOEBUS - After Clouds – SUN. Our ordeals are temporary. What is important is that we do the best with what we are given And Remember - Every cloud has a silver lining
