Outside The Box Gallery Wrap

What feels at once whimsical and reverent here is the gentle intimacy between the winged figure and the small, hovering fish. The angel’s elongated profile and delicate hand reach toward the fish with a calm, almost tender concentration, while the fish returns that attention with equal presence—so the scene reads like a quiet exchange rather than a sermon. James Christensen layers warm golds, cream, and muted ochres against a cool, weathered ground, giving the composition an antique, storybook quality. Textured costume details—puffs, ribbons, and a checkerboard motif—add playful character without distracting from the simple, earnest gesture at the center. The curved halo-like line behind them and the soft scattering of marks across the surface suggest a suspended, magical space where small things are honored. It’s an image that quietly celebrates wonder and gratitude, the kind of picture that rewards a slow, smiling look and leaves you imagining the little mysteries that brighten everyday life.
The Artwork
"The words coming out of this angel’s mouth are purposely provocative and designed to make you wonder 'What does that mean?' They are in Latin, "beatus est pisciculus," meaning 'Blessed is the little fish.' Floating fish symbolize the magic all around us and and in Jim's world they are blessed little things unto themselves, bringing this magic into our lives. Is the angel blessing the fish or the fish blessing the angel? The fish is a symbol I frequently use and this painting was meant as my 'thank-you' for a lot of the magic in my life."
