A stillness holds the scene—quiet, concentrated, and almost reverent—so that the small human choices become the picture’s heart. Two trackers move among tumbling rocks beneath a waterfall: one kneels, intent on the ground, the other stands with a calm, watchful posture, while packhorses wait patiently behind. The palette is earthy and sunlit; warm ochres and russet clothing contrast with the cool white spray and shadowed greens, giving the scene both intimacy and breadth. You can almost hear the water and feel the careful hush of experienced footsteps as the men read the landscape—broken twigs, disturbed moss—rather than rush forward. "Over the years, I have seen many come and visit, yet most miss the obvious opportunities to truly see and hear the unique qualities of our tribal homeland," relates Blackfoot Daryl Kipp in his introduction of Howard Terpning "A Tribute to the Plains People." "Howard's paintings serve an important role for their profound portrayal of Indian people, which help capture the ever-fading image of early-day Native America."
Terpning's description of "The Trackers" is such an observation, "Scenes such as this played out countless times in the 18th and 19th centuries. We don't know who they are tracking, but they do not seem to sense immediate danger because they don't have their bows in hand. They see signs among the rocks, such as a broken twig or displaced moss. We do know that they won't give up their search ¨D whether they find the enemy they are seeking, we will never know."
It is the power of Terpning's artistic skill that enables these observations to be all the more profound. The Trackers is just the type of work to which Kipp refers. Two men inhabit a beautiful, pristine landscape. Howard conveys subtly, but implicitly, these men's tie to it. For generations this has been their land and any disturbance to it will be noted and pursued.

Quite simply, Howard Terpning is one of the most lauded painters of Western art. His awards are so numerous and he is honored with them so often, that to list them would require changing the count every few months. To name three would be to cite the highest prizes awarded to Western art: countless awards from the Cowboy Artists of America, the Hubbard Art Award for Excellence, the National Academy of Western Art s Prix de West and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gene Autry Museum.
Why such praise? Passion, compassion, devotion and respect for his subject matter, extraordinary talent in palette and brushstroke, an exceptional ability to evoke emotion both in his paintings and from those viewing them — all this and more has made Terpning the "Storyteller of the Native American."
Born in Illinois and educated at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the American Academy of Art, he first gained attention from some powerful Time and Newsweek covers. Film fans praised his movie posters for such classics as The Sound of Music, Dr. Zhivago and the re-issue of Gone with the Wind.
But his love of the West and Native American traditions saw his transition to fine art. Terpning was a long-time member of the Cowboy Artists of America, which has presented him with Gold and Silver awards, "Best of Show" awards, and "Best Overall Show by a Single Artist" awards more than two dozen times.
His first book, The Art of Howard Terpning won the Wrangler "Outstanding Art Book" award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. Spirit of the Plains People, his second book, was released in 2001 in conjunction with a one-man show at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. A third, Tribute to the Plains People, was released in 2012 to celebrate his retrospective at The Autry National Center in Los Angeles.
