The Gallery's Perspective
There is an intimate, sorrowful tenderness in the way these two women lean into one another. The nearer figure supports the older woman with a steadying arm and a quiet, protective presence; the older woman’s closed eyes and bowed head read as exhausted grief rather than a posed expression. Warm, earthy tones—soft ochres, muted greens and rust—ground the scene while pale light from a clouded sky washes the figures with a gentle, almost sacred hush. Small, vivid touches—the blood-streaked cloth held between them and the cluster of red poppies at their feet—give the composition its emotional weight without shouting. The rocky ground and vertical timber behind them suggest a hard, uncompromising setting, yet the closeness of the two figures creates a clear human center: consolation, endurance, and a shared sorrow that feels both very personal and quietly universal.

About At Birth and Death Gallery Wrap
My piece, titled “At Birth and Death”, is a homage to the dichotomies and chiasmus of blood that defined the crucifixion of Christ. Most of all it is a tribute to the women who were at the center of the story from start to finish. Throughout the painting the balance of light and dark, warm and cools, hard rocks and tender flowers, elicits the delicate and essential tension between the pain and despair of Christ’s death and the hope He ultimately brought. Mary, His mother, cradles in her arms a bloody piece of His clothing, reminiscent of the bloody swaddling clothes she once held Him in as a babe. Just as her blood was shed to bring Him into the world, so was His to birth salvation for all. Reproduced from the artists original artwork of oil on canvas.
