Sail and Steam on The East River
$395.00
A single sailboat leaning into a gentle breeze gives this coastal scene a delightful sense of ease and quiet adventure. Don Demers places the boat just off a low, tree-lined island, its warm hull and crisply lit sail catching afternoon sun against cool blue water. The foreground’s sandy path and tall grasses invite you into the scene as if you’ve just stepped onto the shore and are watching the sailor pass by, thoughtful and alert to the shoals hinted along the shoreline. Soft, diffuse clouds and a pale sky lend the whole image a late-summer glow—calm, familiar, and slightly nostalgic. It’s a painting about motion without urgency: the hush of the tide, the measured diplomacy between wind and hull, and the small mystery of an apparently deserted island that suggests stories rather than answers. This makes for a quietly evocative addition where someone might want a moment of seaside repose and gentle narrative in their room.
