You feel the presence of the buffalo before you notice the fine detail — a slow, steady power that fills the small canvas. The animal’s dark, shaggy head and curved horns emerge from a veil of dust and light, giving the composition a quiet immediacy: it’s as if the viewer has stepped into the edge of its range and caught a brief, intimate encounter. Warm earth tones across the shoulders and flanks contrast with the cool, misty air near the ground, suggesting both heat and movement without frantic action. Artist Daniel Smith had yet another stellar year in 2009. He enjoyed a two week research safari to Kenya last summer and in September, both of his entries to the Jackson Hole Art Auction sold. Also in September, Dan was included in the Eiteljorg Museum's Quest for the West Art Show and Sale, an invitational exhibition featuring 50 of the country’s outstanding artists. There he won the Harrison Eiteljorg Purchase Award for Stillwater Crossing, a face-to-face with a buffalo in mid-streamùlook for Greenwich Workshop’s fine art edition of this painting in 2010. All of this in addition to gallery shows and invitationals including the November “Small Works, Great Wonders” show at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and an entry accepted at the prestigious “Birds in Art” exhibit at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum.

Painter Daniel Smith, who is equal parts hermit, aesthete, and explorer of the outback, has never thought of himself as being a visual provocateur.
Who could have thought that classical wildlife art would one day be considered simultaneously accessible and avant-garde? Who would have guessed that images of animals would loom large as perhaps the most potent icons of our time?
Animals are telltale totems, not only of the past, but of a yet uncertain future. The opening of the one-man exhibition, "Animal Magnetism: The Wildlife Art of Daniel Smith" at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in 2008 was validation of Smith's growing stature in this unique and provocative artistic genre. "In my opinion, Dan Smith is truly one of America's great wildlife painters," says John Geraghty, board member of the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles and a prominent art collector.
