There’s a mischievous energy in this little figure that greets you before anything else — its wide, round eyes and forward-leaning stance feel instantly playful. Christopher Pardell’s mixed-media Koyemsi combines a lively, almost dance-like gesture with tactile contrasts: the burnished bronze-like skin tones, the lighter painted skirt and cuffs, and the small turquoise accent at the waist all read as distinct, hand-finished details. The raised arm holding a blade and the opposite hand presenting rattle-like objects give the sculpture a sense of movement and ritual playfulness, while the exaggerated head and animal-like ears hint at the Kachina’s spirit character rather than a literal portrait. Set on a rough rock-like pedestal atop a dark square base, the figure feels both rooted and animated — a small, joyful presence that brings ceremony and comic relief into the room.

About Koyemsi - Kachina
Koyemsi, Kachina by Christopher Pardell, Legends Kachina Dancers Native American Collection. The Kachina Dancers Collection. In their corporeal manifestations the kachinas bring much needed rain, present gifts, and provide entertainment for Indians. Because of their vast, life-or-death influence over the affairs of men, kachinas are honored in ceremony after ceremony. Masked dancers, the Kachina impersonators, who believe themselves to be the embodiment of these spirits - a belief shared by other members of the tribe - lead the celebrations.
Koyemsi, Probably the most well-known of all Hopi Kachinas, Koyemsi (or Mud-head) usually appears in almost every Hopi ceremony as a myriad of colorful roles, such as a clown, interlocutor, announcer of dances, or drummer. He is usually the one that plays amusing games with the audience to the accompaniment of rollicking tunes. He then awards his game participants with food or clothing. Continually bringing such fun and frolic to his audience has made Koyemsi one of the most well-liked Hopi Kachinas.

Christopher Pardell began sculpting at the tender age of four, and by his teenage years, Pardell had come to the realization that sculpting was to become his life's work. Influenced by the work of renowned sculptors Russell, Remington and Rodin, Pardell wanted to pursue his passion for realism. His formal education was laid aside in favor of an apprentice moldmaker position with a commercial statuary company, and it was there that he received what he considers to be his "real education in art."
As an apprentice to the Italian master artisans who ran the statuary, Christopher rapidly learned the skills that would enable him to excel as an artist and earn the stature that has come with his success. Never sketching his designs on paper, Christopher composes all of his work in three dimensions, in a maquette. This unique approach explains the unparalleled beauty and detail that are the trademarks of his work. Christophers exceptional style and special talent have served to impress even the most discriminating collector.
