There’s an immediate sense of ritual movement in this small figure—the dancer’s bent knee, raised arm and forward tilt feel like a single, breath-held step. Christopher Pardell’s mixed-media Angakchina captures a ceremonial presence with delicate attention to costume and gesture: the long mask with feathered accents, the short apron and leg bands, and the hand-held rattles all read clearly and give the figure a purposeful identity. Warm bronze tones against cooler grey and gilt highlights create a tactile contrast that suggests both earth and ceremony, while the textured rock base anchors the dancer as if poised at the edge of a mesa. About Angakchina - Kachina
Angakchina Kachina by Christopher Pardell, Legends Kachina Dancers Native American Collection. A true symbol of the Hopi and Zuni spiritual life, Kachinas are believed to be supernatural beings with vast powers to confer prosperity in the form of abundant harvest. Living part of the year disembodied spirits in their own land, they leave their homes and travel to the world of mortals upon the arrival of the winter solstice. Taking up residence within the bodies of men, they remain there until the Niman Kachina festival in July.

Angakchina, Traditionally danced from the Rio Grande to the Hopi Mesas, this long-haired Kachina is one of the most pervasive of all kachinas. Usually appearing in groups, the Angakchina (or Angak'china) is highly favored for the melodious, whimsical songs they sing. Their spirit is sent to bring rain, and it is said that they seldom dance without the appearance of a soft gentle rain to help the crops grow.

Christopher Pardell began sculpting at the tender age of four, and by his teenage years, Pardell had come to the realization that sculpting was to become his life's work. Influenced by the work of renowned sculptors Russell, Remington and Rodin, Pardell wanted to pursue his passion for realism. His formal education was laid aside in favor of an apprentice moldmaker position with a commercial statuary company, and it was there that he received what he considers to be his "real education in art."
As an apprentice to the Italian master artisans who ran the statuary, Christopher rapidly learned the skills that would enable him to excel as an artist and earn the stature that has come with his success. Never sketching his designs on paper, Christopher composes all of his work in three dimensions, in a maquette. This unique approach explains the unparalleled beauty and detail that are the trademarks of his work. Christophers exceptional style and special talent have served to impress even the most discriminating collector.
