Look For America
$400.00
There is a calm dignity in the way the figure holds herself—a gentle, assured presence that draws you in before you notice the details. The subject stands wrapped in a Hudson’s Bay–style blanket whose bold, vertical bands of red, yellow, black and green set up a warm, reassuring rhythm against the soft, neutral ground. Her posture is composed and upright; hands meet at the center holding a small fan and a grouping of feathers, gestures that feel respectful and quietly ceremonial without demanding a narrative beyond the moment itself. Light falls across her face and the folds of the blanket, revealing the painterly blend of soft modeling and delicate edge work that gives the image a tactile softness. Small accents—the beadwork necklace, concho-style earrings and the turquoise-toned ring—add personality and color notes that echo the blanket’s palette. Overall, the painting balances poise and intimacy: it feels like an invitation to pause, acknowledge presence, and appreciate a careful, reverent portrayal of costume and bearing.
The Artwork
For this piece, I wanted to do another Native American woman in a Hudson Bay blanket. In 2023, I got best of show at a show in Wyoming for a guy in a Hudson Bay blanket that i had painted, and had the idea to paint a female version and take this piece to that same show this year. Though maybe it is more of a contemporary piece because of the fan and the necklace and that they aren't Northern Plains wear. But I thought if she was Southern Plains perhaps the fan could have come from Mexico or something as a trade item, as I am sure things got passed around quite a bit between the different groups of people and their cultures. Reproduced from the artists ariginal artwork of oil on board.
