NOTES: As usual for this exuberant wildlife enthusiast and artist, Daniel Smith has been busy. He won the Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award at the Masters of the American West show in Los Angeles in February. After the many feet of spring snow outside his Montana studio melted, he was off to the American Masters Exhibition and Sale at the Salmagundi Club in New York in May and The Prix de West Invitational in June. The artist and his studio were featured in the May/June issue of Art of the West.
Siberian tigers are found in the Amur River region of Russia and China, and in North Korea. Estimates put their numbers in the wild at 200-300. Tiger bone and other body parts are used in traditional Chinese and Korean medicines. Siberians are endangered and protected, and poaching is their pre-eminent threat.

Painter Daniel Smith, who is equal parts hermit, aesthete, and explorer of the outback, has never thought of himself as being a visual provocateur. Who could have thought that classical wildlife art would one day be considered simultaneously accessible and avant-garde? Who would have guessed that images of animals would loom large as perhaps the most potent icons of our time? Animals are telltale totems, not only of the past, but of a yet uncertain future. The opening of the one-man exhibition, "Animal Magnetism: The Wildlife Art of Daniel Smith" at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in 2008 was validation of Smith's growing stature in this unique and provocative artistic genre.
